Chapter 793 Adeline is Missing
"Is Howard here?"
Jasper raised an eyebrow. He hadn't gone looking for Howard, yet Howard had come to him?
Jasper held Adeline tightly, a cold, arrogant smile playing on his lips. "Let him in."
Oliver frowned, glancing at Adeline in Jasper's arms, and lowered his voice:
"If you want to give him a piece of your mind or deal with him, I won't stop you. He deserves it for what he's done. But I think you should let Adeline rest for a bit. She's just lost her child and is really fragile."
"Having a confrontation with him in front of her right now wouldn't be good."
Jasper paused, looked at Adeline in his arms, and finally sighed deeply. He carefully took the lifeless baby from her arms.
But Adeline reacted like she had lost her mind. As soon as Jasper took the baby away, she frantically grabbed the small bundle back. "No!"
"Don't take my baby away!"
"My baby!"
Her delirious state made Jasper's heart ache as if it were being torn apart by countless knives.
He turned to look at Ryan.
Ryan quickly found a clean blanket and had a servant wrap it up to resemble a baby.
With Jasper's half-coaxing, half-deceiving efforts, Adeline finally let go of the dirty, lifeless baby and held the blanket-wrapped bundle, returning to bed.
"Baby, baby, let's sleep."
She held the small bundle, tears streaming down her face as she closed her eyes.
Jasper stood there, watching her sorrowful expression, and silently turned his face away.
Even though Adeline seemed insane, he could tell from her clear eyes that she wasn't truly mad.
She was just... too heartbroken and sad, using this way to cope with her emotions.
He sighed, looked down at the dirty, lifeless baby in his arms, and handed it to Ryan:
"Clean him up, put him in some nice clothes... I'll take Adeline to bury him tomorrow morning."
Ryan nodded solemnly, took the lifeless baby in his arms, and left.
Jasper took a deep breath, removed his coat, wiped off the dirt and bloodstains on his body, changed into clean clothes, and glanced at Oliver:
"Let's go."
The two men walked to the front hall of the courtyard.
In the front hall, Howard was pacing anxiously, asking the servant beside him:
"How did the baby die? Wasn't everything fine a few days ago? He was even kicking her belly. How could he just be gone?"
"How is Adeline now?"
"Is she crying? Is she causing a scene?"
"Does Mr. Phoebe really care if Adeline is crying or causing a scene?"
A cold male voice sounded from the doorway just as Howard finished speaking.
Howard frowned and instinctively turned to look.
At the door, Jasper stood there in black, his face dark and stormy.
Outside, the sky was filled with thunder and lightning. A flash of lightning illuminated Jasper's face, giving it a cold, sinister glow, like a demon from hell.
Howard, pale-faced, instinctively took a step back.
Jasper sneered and walked in, "I'm not a wild beast. What are you afraid of?"
He brushed past Howard, turned, and sat down in a chair, elegantly pouring himself a cup of coffee. He looked at Howard with cold eyes:
"I heard Mr. Phoebe's Daisy had a daughter?"
"You should be celebrating. Why are you here?"
Jasper's words made Howard's frown deepen.
"Why can't I be here? Adeline is my daughter, too!"
"Your daughter?" Jasper sneered, looking at Howard's face. "From what you're saying, it sounds like Adeline is your biological daughter, and Daisy isn't related to you by blood. To someone who doesn't know, it might seem like Daisy is your real daughter."
Howard's face turned as white as a sheet. He clenched his fists.
"Jasper! This is a Phoebe family matter. It's none of your business! Why do I value Daisy's child, don't you understand? Daisy's child is Brandon's! Because of you, the Phoebe family and the Torres family have been pushed to the brink. We're counting on this child to strengthen our alliance!"
The more he spoke, the angrier he became. If it weren't for Jasper, he wouldn't be so beholden to the Torres family, letting them call the shots. Now, Jasper had the nerve to mock him!
Jasper elegantly placed his empty coffee cup down, his deep eyes glancing at Howard.
"Mr. Phoebe, you're wrong. For the sake of Adeline's child, I've spent the past six months only targeting the Torres family, not taking any action against the Phoebe family. The Phoebe family's current economic crisis is a result of my attacks on the Torres family. If the Phoebe family hadn't allied with the Torres family, you wouldn't be in this mess."
"But..." Jasper looked up, a wicked smile playing on his lips. "From today on, I won't show any mercy to the Phoebe family. If Adeline's child had been born safely, I might have overlooked the fact that you made her swear an oath. But the child is gone."
Jasper stood up, his face etched with deep-seated hatred.
"From today on, the Phoebe family will face hell."
With that, he turned and left. Howard stood there, stunned. Jasper... How did Jasper know he made Adeline swear an oath? And... he didn't make her swear to curse the child, just to keep her away from Jasper! But now...
Seeing Howard's pale face, Oliver sneered.
"Old man, if you knew this would happen, why did you do it in the first place? When you made Adeline swear that oath, you were ruthless and decisive. Now that something has happened to the child, you're playing the innocent victim?"
Howard paused, turned, and glared fiercely at Oliver.
"Shut up! If it weren't for you and Dennis saving him back then, he'd be dead! And now he dares to threaten me?"
Oliver laughed coldly. "Do you really think Jasper would have died without my help? You underestimate him. A man who could have a friend like David, who could make the two major families in Oceancrest City join forces to oppose him within a year... could he really die so easily?"
Howard glared at him coldly, then turned and walked towards the back courtyard. "I'm going to check on Adeline."
Oliver shrugged and followed.
When the father and son pushed open Adeline's room door, they found the bed empty. Not only was Adeline gone, but the blanket bundle Ryan had made for her was also missing.
