Chapter 782 Why Not at Home?
As Adeline pushed open the door to the Magnolia Estate, she was immediately met with a pillow thrown by Mia.
She didn't dodge in time, and the pillow hit her square in the face.
It didn't hurt at all.
But Adeline still burst into tears.
It was as if the emotions she had been holding back all night finally found an outlet.
She stood at the doorway, then crouched down and cried like a child.
Oliver and Mia, who were in the living room, both panicked.
Oliver quickly walked over, picked Adeline up, and placed her on the couch.
"What happened?"
Mia hurried over as well, flustered. "I... I didn't throw it that hard! How..."
"She's upset about something else," Oliver said, frowning slightly. He comforted Mia before gently ruffling Adeline's hair. "Tell me, what's wrong?"
Adeline couldn't hold back any longer and hugged Oliver's waist, burying her head in his chest.
"Oliver... I failed my kids... I chose the Phoebe family, I chose Mom, and I let them down... From today on, they probably won't like me as their mom anymore."
Adeline's words made Oliver freeze for a moment.
He hugged her tightly, feeling her pain.
This situation was unavoidable.
But Adeline had made the right decision.
Having the kids stay with Jasper was better than bringing them back to the Phoebe family.
The kids were Adeline's weak spot.
The child she was carrying had already given Howard enough leverage to make Adeline swear not to see Jasper.
If the other three went to the Phoebe family... Jasper, no matter how ruthless, wouldn't harm the kids or use them against Adeline.
Watching Oliver hold Adeline, Mia felt a pang of jealousy.
Over the years, Adeline had no one to rely on besides her three kids and Jasper.
Now, even though Oliver was a jerk in relationships, he was the most dependable person for Adeline.
Mia sniffled and went to the kitchen to get water for them.
Adeline cried in Oliver's arms for a long time before she finally regained her composure.
She took a deep breath, let go of Oliver, accepted the water Mia handed her, and forced a smile.
"Sorry for the scene."
Then she glanced at Mia. "Should I start calling you Mrs. Phoebe now?"
Adeline's words made the room fall silent.
Mia's face turned pale, and she lowered her head. "No, we didn't..."
"I'll take responsibility for her," Oliver said, taking a sip of water and setting the glass down. "We'll talk on the way back."
With that, Oliver pulled Adeline up and left.
Mia sat on the couch, watching Oliver's tall figure disappear, feeling a strange emptiness in her heart.
Oliver had said he was drunk and unaware of what had happened.
But what about her?
She wasn't unconscious.
She knew everything.
This was her home. When he touched her, she had a thousand ways to make him leave.
But she didn't struggle. She let him hold her, their fingers intertwined.
Maybe it had been too long since she had been with a man?
She didn't know what came over her.
She was captivated by him, thinking she could be special to him, so she kissed him without hesitation.
But she didn't expect that the Oliver who woke up wasn't as gentle as the one from the night before.
He said he would take responsibility, but he also made it clear he wouldn't marry her or love her.
Mia closed her eyes, tears silently falling.
She hated herself for being so naive.
She hated herself for still having fantasies about Oliver after being hurt by Thomas.
"Will you marry Mia?"
In the car on the way back to the Phoebe Mansion, Adeline looked out the window and asked softly.
"No." Oliver's voice was calm, "I promised Joseph I would only marry his mother."
Oliver's words made Adeline frown.
She turned to glare at Oliver in the passenger seat.
"If you don't plan to marry Mia, then last night..."
"I was drunk."
Oliver rubbed his aching forehead, cutting her off. "And I wasn't in a normal state last night."
"I've already contacted Dennis to come to the Phoebe Mansion to draw my blood. I suspect I was drugged."
Adeline found it amusing. "Drugged?"
"Last night, you were with me and Daisy, eating and drinking."
Oliver looked at her through the rearview mirror, his expression cold.
"Don't forget, Daisy kept urging you to drink."
Adeline was stunned. "You mean..."
"Adeline."
Oliver's voice was icy. "If I was drugged last night, it was to protect you."
"If Daisy drugged you, what do you think she wanted to do?"
Adeline felt a chill run down her spine.
She bit her lip. "But... last night's drinks, Daisy..."
"That's why we're going back to see Daisy's condition."
"If nothing unexpected happened, she wouldn't have had a good night either."
Adeline bit her lip, finally understanding what had happened.
Her hands clenched tightly together.
Mia's suffering last night... had partly been her fault.
Adeline closed her eyes, her face full of guilt.
"If I had known you were drugged, I wouldn't have taken you to Mia's... you and Mia..."
Oliver turned to look out the window.
"I said I would take responsibility for her. Except for love and marriage, I can give her anything I have."
Adeline sniffled and looked at him.
"What if I ask you to give her those two things?"
At that moment, the car stopped. They had arrived at the Phoebe Mansion.
Oliver smirked, opening the car door as he spoke.
"Impossible. Even if she's Joseph's biological mother, it won't happen."
With that, Oliver closed the car door and entered the Phoebe Mansion.
Adeline frowned and followed him.
As soon as they entered, they saw Brandon in a wheelchair.
Brandon looked exhausted, being pushed out of the Phoebe Mansion by his subordinates.
Adeline was shocked. "Brandon, you..."
It was only six in the morning.
Why was Brandon leaving the Phoebe Mansion so early?
Could it be that last night...
"Adeline." Seeing her, Brandon's eyes showed a moment of panic.
But only for a moment.
He quickly composed himself, looking as gentle as ever.
"Where were you so early?"
"Why weren't you home?"
Oliver chuckled. "Mr. Torres, why don't you explain why you're leaving the Phoebe Mansion so early?"
