Chapter 741 Not Waiting for Her Anymore
The elevator descended from the top floor of the hospital to the ground floor.
Inside the enclosed room, Jasper held Adeline tightly.
Adeline remained silent, letting him hold her.
She didn't respond to Jasper's words about taking her home.
Jasper knew her mind was in turmoil and didn't push her for an answer.
The elevator arrived.
Adeline slowly stepped out, feeling like her soul had been drained, her mind a chaotic mess.
Why was Jasper here?
How much had he overheard about her and Howard?
Sensing Adeline's distress, Jasper remained silent during the drive from the hospital to Magnolia Estate.
Adeline sat quietly in the back seat, staring blankly at the city lights outside the window.
The silence between them was almost deafening.
When they were together, they never imagined that one of them would be from the Foster family and the other from the Phoebe family.
A bitter family feud.
The Phoebe family had caused the death of Lily's daughter, Esther.
The Foster family had caused the death of Howard's younger brother, Wilford Phoebe.
Two lives lost, along with numerous financial crises that nearly bankrupted both families.
There was so much resentment.
The car drove quietly to Magnolia Estate.
Once the car stopped, Adeline got out. As she was closing the door, Jasper called out to her.
Adeline looked up.
Jasper said, "I came to Oceancrest City to bring you back, to marry you, and to give our three kids a complete family. Don't let us down."
Adeline closed her eyes and forced a bitter smile, saying nothing.
She turned away, and out of Jasper's sight, she gently touched her own belly.
She wanted to give the unborn child inside her a home too.
But now, everything was spiraling out of control.
She couldn't change her origins, the fact that she was a Phoebe.
Before meeting Zara, she thought she could sever ties with the Phoebe family.
But after seeing the pitiful, critically ill Zara, she hesitated.
Maybe it was the blood relation or maybe it was shared suffering; she understood Zara's pain too well.
She even wanted to see Zara off properly.
But if she returned to the Phoebe family, her relationship with Jasper might never recover.
Thinking of this, Adeline felt her heart grow heavy with sorrow.
She slowly, step by step, entered Magnolia Estate.
Jasper watched her leave in silence.
From her back and her silence, he almost understood her inner turmoil and hesitation.
Jasper bit his lip hard, recalling Dennis's words when he had grabbed him by the neck in the hospital.
"I actually have a way to keep you and Adeline together. If Zara weren't critically ill today, Adeline wouldn't have agreed to go upstairs to see her. I think the Phoebe family might use Zara's illness to bring Adeline back. If you can cure Zara before Adeline returns to the Phoebe family, she can choose not to go back. Zara's poison isn't incurable. Crag Root Herb is the key ingredient for the antidote I made for her. And it's only found in Radiance Springs."
Jasper closed his eyes, feeling the weight of his hands on the steering wheel.
Dennis had shown him a picture of the Crag Root Herb.
He had indeed seen it before on the cliff where Luna had fallen, a place where he had narrowly escaped death.
Jasper sat in silence for a long time before finally releasing the steering wheel and picking up his phone.
"Ryan," he said, his voice steady.
"Yeah, boss?" Ryan replied, a hint of surprise in his tone.
Jasper continued, "I'm heading back to Radiance Springs tomorrow."
Ryan was taken aback. "Are you sure, Mr. Foster? We've just established a strong presence here in Oceancrest City. Mr. Stonehaven has already subdued the majority of the gangs. We're on the brink of success, and you want to leave now?"
Jasper took a deep breath. "I'm going back alone. You and David stay here and keep things under control. But I want you to announce that you're leaving with me. Make it look like the Foster Group is pulling out of Oceancrest City. Got it?"
Ryan was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Understood. I'll book your flight for tomorrow."
Jasper hung up and started the car. Dennis probably wasn't lying. Whether the Crag Root Herb could save Zara or not, whether Adeline would come back with him or not after Zara was saved. As long as there was hope, he had to try.
Adeline tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep. Mia stayed up with her, her own thoughts troubled.
Even after learning that Oliver and Adeline were half-siblings, Mia was still upset. Her frustration was divided between her worry for Adeline and her irritation with Oliver's cold demeanor. Why couldn't he just explain why he took Adeline to see her biological mother? Did he think she didn't deserve an explanation?
Mia sighed and held Adeline's hand. "I really think you shouldn't give up on Jasper so easily. He's one of a kind."
Adeline closed her eyes and smiled bitterly. "I don't want to give up either, but..."
"How about this," Mia interrupted, sitting up and looking Adeline in the eye. "Ask Jasper to wait for you. You said your mother doesn't have much time left, right? Ask him to wait until after she passes. Then you can go back to him. By then, the feud between the Phoebe and Foster families won't matter as much."
Adeline's hands clenched tightly. "Would this work?"
"I think it can," Mia said with a shrug. "Every day he looks up at you from downstairs, saying he'll wait for you to be ready to see him. If he's willing to wait, a bit longer shouldn't be a problem. Besides, you've loved him for so many years, and he finally responded to you. Asking him to wait a little longer isn't too much, right?"
Adeline nodded slowly. "Alright, when he comes today, I'll tell him."
If Jasper was really willing to wait for her, she wouldn't hold the past against him. After Zara passed away, she would go back with him.
With that thought, Adeline even started to look forward to Jasper's visit today. But she waited from morning until afternoon, and Jasper didn't show up.
"Strange," Mia muttered, frowning as she dialed Joseph's number.
"Mr. Foster, where did you go today?" she asked when he picked up.
Joseph's voice was clear on the other end. "Mr. Foster packed his bags and went back to Radiance Springs."
Joseph's words hit Adeline like a punch to the gut. Jasper went back to Radiance Springs? After knowing she was a Phoebe, he wasn't going to wait for her?
