Chapter 462 What's Worth It and What's Not?
When the clock hit eleven at night, Adeline wrapped up her statement. She and Vikram were chilling with a bunch of other young folks.
Watching everyone call their parents to bail them out, Adeline was stumped.
Who the heck should she call to get her and Vikram out of this mess? It was already past eleven. Violet and Mia were probably knocked out by now. Lucia and Anne? Probably snoozing too. Timothy and Robert might be free, but asking them to bail her out? Super embarrassing.
Just when she was about to lose it, a cop barged in. "Adeline, Vikram, someone's here to bail you out. You can go now."
Adeline frowned and shot a look at Vikram.
Vikram looked just as confused. "I didn't call anyone."
They followed the cop out. As soon as they stepped out, there was Jasper, rocking a smoky gray trench coat, looking all cold and intimidating.
Seeing them, Jasper shot Vikram a cold glance and then turned to Adeline. "Racing and fighting with kids this late? You're really living it up."
Adeline rolled her eyes. "I've been grinding non-stop for half a month. Can't I chill a bit?"
Jasper snorted. "Your idea of chilling is racing and fighting with a bunch of nineteen-year-olds?"
"Yup." Adeline sneered. "Compared to Mr. Foster dating a twenty-year-old, racing and fighting with teens is pretty tame."
Sensing the tension, Vikram quickly cleared his throat and stepped between them, smiling. "Jasper, how'd you know we were here?"
Jasper rolled his eyes. "Saw it on your New Feed post, remember?"
Vikram was taken aback and then remembered he had sneakily taken a pic of Adeline earlier and posted it. Didn't expect Jasper to see it.
Vikram chuckled awkwardly. "So you scroll New Feed too? Thought you were always busy."
Jasper said, "I'm usually swamped. Today, I was just helping Luna rehearse her script and ended up scrolling through my feed."
Adeline's face stiffened a bit.
It was already eleven at night. Jasper said he was helping Luna with her lines? Was he trying to show how dedicated Luna was, or how tight their relationship was?
Jasper's few words had shut down Vikram's attempt to ease the tension, leaving him unsure of what to say.
Luckily, they soon reached the parking lot.
"Get in the car." Jasper pointed to his ride. "I'll take you home."
Adeline frowned. "I'll have Vikram take me home."
Her words made Jasper's eyes darken instantly.
Jasper looked coldly at Adeline. "Vikram not heading that way."
"He'll still give you a lift, even if it's out of his way." With that, Adeline turned to Vikram. "Take me home."
Vikram pressed his lips together and quickly nodded. "Okay, get in the car!"
He was about to pull out his car keys but realized they weren't there. Vikram slapped his forehead. "I think I left the keys at the station. Wait here!"
With that, Vikram turned and bolted back to the police station.
Watching Vikram bolt off, Jasper smirked. "Didn't you always hate clumsy guys? What, changed your taste?"
Adeline frowned and shot back, "Why not? I dig his young vibe; is that a crime?"
She yawned. "Just like you dig Ms. Jones. I like 'em young and fresh too."
Jasper's eyes narrowed. "You like young guys, so you stay up all night racing and brawling with nineteen-year-olds?"
He sneered. "You were all obedient and well-behaved when you were actually young, but now you're all over the place."
Adeline laughed out loud. "Did you really think I was some goody-two-shoes at nineteen? I just didn't get the chance. When I was nineteen, I met a jerk and spent every day trying to make him happy. I did everything to be what he liked, but he never liked me, not from start to finish. So now I finally get to be myself, is that a problem?"
The night wind lifted her long dress. Adeline looked up at Jasper, her smile dripping with sarcasm. "Actually, I think racing and fighting is pretty awesome. At least I can reclaim the youth that jerk wasted. Mr. Foster, don't you think so?"
Jasper's hands clenched silently at his sides.
When Adeline was nineteen, he met her. He always thought she was as he saw her: Obedient, steady, boring.
But today, Jasper realized she became that way because she thought he liked her that way.
Taking a deep breath, Jasper turned his face away. "Reclaiming youth once is enough. You should chill with these activities; it's not good for your heart. Lauren and Blake would be worried."
Adeline raised an eyebrow mockingly. "Wow, you actually mention them in front of me. I thought you forgot you had two kids."
"Adeline!" Jasper frowned and glared at her.
Adeline looked up, fearlessly meeting his gaze.
The tension between them was thick.
At that moment, Vikram returned with the car keys.
Seeing them facing off again, he slapped his forehead and quickly rushed over, stepping between them. "Got the car keys."
"You take her home." Jasper gave Vikram one last cold look before turning and walking away.
Vikram frowned and called after him, "Jasper, leaving so soon? You bailed us out, and we haven't even thanked you yet. Want to grab a late-night snack together?"
"No need." Jasper strode towards his car. "Luna's still at home practicing her speech. I don't feel comfortable leaving her alone. You two enjoy your snack."
Jasper's words made Adeline's heart skip a beat.
"What's there to worry about?" Watching Jasper's car drive away, Vikram pouted. "Doesn't he have a bunch of bodyguards and servants at home? Could something happen to Luna?"
Vikram lowered his head. "Besides, is Luna really worth it?"
"What's worth it or not?" Adeline turned and got into the passenger seat of Vikram's car. "If Jasper thinks it's worth it, then it's worth it."
Seeing her suppress her emotions as she got into the car, Vikram bit his lip and looked at Adeline, wanting to say something but ultimately saying nothing.
Vikram opened the car door and got in. "Where to?"
