Chapter 37 Trending
Adeline didn't acknowledge him. The last person she wanted to see right now was Jasper. She walked past the sofa and went to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water.
"Pour me a glass too."
The man's voice sounded cold and detached in the living room. She rolled her eyes, silently cursing him in her mind, but respectfully poured a glass of water for him and placed it on the coffee table. She hadn't forgotten that she was currently a maid, and he was the master of this house. It was only natural for a maid to pour water for her master.
"Why were you crying?"
Jasper elegantly extinguished his cigarette in the ashtray. His deep and bottomless eyes lingered on her face, as if trying to read her thoughts. Adeline sniffled and placed the glass on the table. "It's nothing. If Mr. Foster has no further instructions, I'll go upstairs."
After speaking, she raised her leg to leave. As she passed by him, he reached out his long arm and pulled her into his embrace.
The smell of alcohol from the man's body filled Adeline's nostrils.
"Are you feeling wronged because of what happened today?" He pressed her down onto the sofa, his voice low and pleasant.
Being in such close proximity suddenly made Adeline uncomfortable. She desperately tried to break free from his grasp, but the difference in their strength left her with no room to resist.
In the end, she forcefully pushed him away, gasping heavily as she lied on the sofa. "You're drunk."
"I'm not drunk." Jasper didn't touch her again. Instead, he leaned back on the sofa and chuckled coldly. "Why are you feeling wronged? Even if Molly did something wrong, you were the one who approached me with unrealistic fantasies."
"Whatever happened today, I was the one who suffered more." Adeline laughed at his reasoning.
She gazed coldly at his face. "But you accepted her accusations, didn't you? She's your fiancée, and you're willing to tolerate and defend her all the time. But I'm different. I'm just an ordinary person, yet I've been slandered and called a mistress. Don't I even have the right to feel wronged?"
Jasper twisted his lips, a hint of realization in his eyes.
He sat across from her, lifted the cup of water, and finished it in one gulp. "Actually, Molly is someone very important to me. I should say she is someone important to my wife as well."
Adeline's breath hitched.
She never expected Jasper to bring her up.
She curled her lips. "Is that so?"
Important, huh?
Indeed, Molly was someone very important to her.
In the past, she treated Molly as her dearest sister and shared everything good with her.
So later on, Molly shamelessly took her husband as well.
And then Molly became the compass for her future life.
Every time she wanted to believe in someone, Molly would come to mind.
"Yes." Jasper's drunken eyes gazed at her. "Molly is my wife's sister, someone she loves the most. My wife is the kindest and loveliest person in this world."
He looked at Adeline, his gaze seemingly drifting past her toward a distant direction. "The first time I saw her was under the cherry blossom tree in her university. She was so beautiful that it was impossible to look away."
Drunk Jasper didn't shy away from telling Adeline about the scene when they first met.
To Adeline, his affectionate words were all hypocritical.
He never knew that their first meeting wasn't under a cherry blossom tree.
It was when he had a serious car accident.
Years ago, Jasper had a severe car accident.
After being hit by a car and abandoned on the side of the road, she saved him and took him to the hospital. She took meticulous care of him for a whole month while he was unconscious.
She had a good impression of him, but she didn't dare to truly like him.
She knew she was too ordinary, not worthy of someone like him, so on the day he woke up, she resolutely left the hospital.
She thought they would never meet again, but she didn't expect to encounter him that day.
At the moment of reunion, she started to believe that he was her destined fate.
So she began to pursue him desperately, loved him desperately, and finally, she married him.
On their wedding day, he explicitly told her that he didn't like her.
He didn't know if he would like her in the future, but he wouldn't let anyone else take the position of Mrs. Foster.
At that time, she foolishly thought it was the most beautiful vow.
But what happened after...
She looked at the man in front of her, hatred flashing in her eyes.
She gave up her career for him and sought medical help in every possible way, all because he once said, "It's time to have a child."
Later, she became pregnant with his triplets!
But what she got in return was his betrayal with her own sister, Molly.
What she got in return was him heartlessly sending people to throw her off the cross-sea bridge.
In the end, he even planned to humiliate her after her death with a so-called farewell letter, accusing her of betraying him and demanding that he marry Molly as indicated in the letter!
Whenever Adeline remembered those past occurrences that haunted her at midnight in a foreign country, she would feel a chill down her spine.
If it weren't for their three children and Blake needing treatment, she would have wanted to open up Jasper's chest to see if his heart was truly black!
And yet, this heartless man was now in front of her, pretending to be deeply in love and recounting their past together.
What was the point?
She was nothing more than an outsider now, a maid whom he had just met.
Or perhaps pretending to be affectionate in front of an outsider would ease his conscience a little?
"I don't quite understand." She smiled coldly, her lips curling. "If Mrs. Foster is so important to Mr. Foster, then why are you marrying Molly? Just because she is Mrs. Foster's younger sister?"
Jasper shook his head. "It's because of a farewell letter she left me. She asked me to take good care of Molly, and it would be best if I married her and took care of her for a lifetime. So I got engaged to Molly."
Adeline laughed.
"Does taking care of her require making her your fiancée?"
Jasper frowned and glanced at her. "After my wife passed away, Molly and I didn't have any relationship. Making her my fiancée and announcing it publicly is the best way to take care of her."
"I disagree." Adeline stood up, looking at him with icy eyes. "First, I don't think any sane woman would ask her husband to marry her sister."
"Second, I don't see any practical protection in the role of a fiancée. If you truly want to protect Molly, you can simply treat her as your sister or a pure friend."
"You could even publicly declare that she is your wife's sister, and since your wife is no longer here, you want to care for her. Who would oppose that?"
Jasper's bottomless gaze locked onto her, but he remained silent.
Adeline took a deep breath. "So, Mr. Foster, why bother finding excuses for yourself?"
"You simply want to marry Miss Molly."
"Don't push all this responsibility onto your ex-wife. She can't bear it."
