Chapter 587 Strong People Are Never Alone
"Alright, I'm home. We'll chat later this afternoon."
Adeline hung up on Violet and took a moment to gather herself before stepping into the villa.
Usually, this place would be buzzing with activity around this time.
Blake and Lauren would be bugging Jasper to join them for breakfast. Lauren would crack some jokes at the table, making even the quietest guys laugh out loud.
But today, the living room was dead silent. The breakfast table was cleared, and there was no sign of Blake, Lauren, or Jasper.
She frowned, dropping the groceries in the kitchen with Alice and asking the butler what was up.
The butler sighed and spoke in a low voice. "Right after you left, Mr. Foster did have breakfast with Blake and Lauren."
He continued, "But then Mr. Nathan Foster showed up with his current wife and their kid, accusing Mr. Jasper Foster of not telling them about your engagement."
He added, "Blake and Lauren barely ate and went upstairs. Mr. Foster's in a bad mood and is working in the study now."
Before the butler could finish, Adeline had already shrugged off her coat and handed it to Alice, heading upstairs. "I'll go check on him."
Watching Adeline rush upstairs, Alice sighed and glanced at the butler. "Do you think Ms. Wilson really doesn't like Mr. Foster?"
The butler scratched his head. "It's best not to guess about their business."
Alice pursed her lips. After hanging up Adeline's coat, she saw a message pop up on her phone: [Mr. Torres is asking about Miss Wilson and Jasper's engagement.]
She looked around to make sure no one was watching, then ducked into the kitchen to reply: [It's fake, just to lure out Molly.]
[Is it really fake?]
[Yeah, totally fake. I'm sure.]
After sending the message, Alice took a deep breath and put her phone away.
She was originally sent by Brandon to keep an eye on Adeline and Jasper. But now, she didn't really want to go back.
When Adeline pushed open the study door, Jasper was in his wheelchair, deeply engrossed in a document.
A huge stack of files was piled on the desk, all delivered by Ryan early in the morning.
Even though Jasper hadn't fully recovered, he hadn't let work slide for a second.
Adeline often came to help him out.
Even though she didn't get all the business stuff, she could read the documents to Jasper and take notes as he instructed.
Right now, she couldn't help but shake her head.
Adeline walked over and gently took the document from his hand, then sat beside him. "Why didn't you wait for me?"
He smiled. "I had nothing else to do, so I started working."
"Without my permission, you can't just start working." She gave him a look, then read the rest of the document to him, making notes and comments as he dictated.
After she wrapped up one document and got ready for the next, Jasper spoke softly, "Adeline."
Her hand paused mid-search. "What's up?"
He looked at her intently. "When Bennett comes back and gets his memory back, are you still planning to leave?"
Adeline was taken aback for a moment, then gave an awkward smile. "Maybe."
He sighed. "If you do leave, don't let me lose track of you."
Adeline's hand froze again. She turned and gave him a stiff smile. "Why?"
"I don't want to lose touch with the kids. I don't want them to hate me like I hate my father."
Adeline bit her lip, finally getting what he meant. She sighed. "They won't. The kids really like you. And you're nothing like your father."
Jasper looked at her for a long time before finally smiling. "You're right."
Then he glanced at the document in her hand. "Let's keep going."
Adeline read the document while secretly watching his expression. Even though he tried to hide it, she could still see the loneliness and sadness in his eyes.
She thought about what the butler had said earlier, a pang of heartache hitting her.
She knew Jasper well. He had never felt any warmth from his father since he was a kid.
Jasper had always worked hard, thinking that if he was good enough, Nathan would be happy and stay by his side.
But he had waited for over twenty years. Even now, Nathan showed no fatherly warmth towards him.
Nathan's return to Radiance Springs this time was to fight for the inheritance.
But Nathan wasn't completely heartless. He doted on Rex almost to the point of spoiling him.
Even though Jasper didn't show anything, Adeline still knew he was disappointed and sad.
Thinking of this, she took a deep breath and silently held Jasper's hand.
"Don't worry. Even if we part ways in the future, I won't let the kids forget you. You won't be lonely."
Jasper, with a stern face, pulled his hand away from hers. "Strong people are never alone."
He tiredly rubbed his aching forehead. "Let's keep going."
At three in the afternoon, Adeline finally helped Jasper finish all the documents.
Seeing that it was almost time, she changed clothes and took a cab to the place she had arranged with Violet.
Jasper wanted to have the driver take her, but she refused.
She didn't want to be too flashy. Plus, the engagement ceremony in the evening was already being prepared. Many relatives were coming to the ceremony, and there were lots of places where cars were needed.
Taking a cab would be fine.
But Adeline didn't expect that when the car reached a small road near the cross-sea bridge, several black cars surrounded her cab.
Adeline instinctively picked up her phone to call for help, only to find the signal blocked.
The next moment, several men in black rushed out of the cars, dragged her out of the cab, and shoved her into their car!
