Chapter 554 What Exactly Did She Do?

Adeline's question made Jasper go quiet for a moment.

Honestly, the only thing linking him and Luna was the bone marrow she donated to Blake.

But Jasper wasn't about to share that with Adeline.

He didn't want her thinking he'd done something noble for Blake's treatment. He didn't want her leaving with any gratitude or guilt. He'd rather she left hating him.

Hatred would make sure they never crossed paths again. Adeline could move on and start fresh with her kids.

"Got nothing to say?" Adeline sneered, turning to stare out the car window.

She knew it. Jasper never faced up to his actions, not six years ago, not now.

The rain outside kept pouring, making it harder to see or drive.

Every time the car swerved around a fallen tree, Adeline felt a jolt of fear. She used to be terrified of weather like this. But now, all she cared about was getting to Blake and Lauren as soon as possible.

After three hours, they finally made it to Frostproof, Lily's hometown.

The car pulled up a few miles from Lily's old house. "Mr. Foster, the road's blocked. We can't drive any further; we'll have to walk."

Adeline frowned, looking ahead.

Sure enough, the road was flooded, water up to their calves, and blocked by rocks and trees. Walking was the only way.

They got out of the car.

As soon as Adeline stepped out, she saw Luna's car parked nearby.

It was clear Luna had faced the same road conditions and decided to walk too.

"Still warm," Ryan said, touching Luna's car. "She hasn't gone far. If we hurry, we might catch up."

He handed out raincoats and walking sticks.

Adeline watched as Ryan, Tim, and Tom put on their raincoats and rolled up their pants. She did the same.

Her slender, porcelain-white calves were exposed, showing the bruises and wounds from her physical therapy sessions at the mental hospital.

Jasper frowned, walked over, and rolled her pants back down.

Adeline looked at him, annoyed. "What are you doing?"

Jasper glanced at her. "Do you see how dirty this water is? Do you want to lose your leg?"

Adeline paused, looking at the rushing flood.

She went quiet. If that water got into her wounds, her leg could be in serious trouble.

But they had to walk into the village. If she didn't go, she wouldn't be at ease.

Seeing her anxious expression, Jasper sighed, put on his raincoat, rolled up his pants, and walked up to her, squatting down. "Get on."

Adeline instinctively took a step back. "I can walk by myself..."

"You're too slow," Jasper said coldly. "If you don't want to slow us down and want to catch up with Luna sooner, don't be stubborn."

With him putting it that way, Adeline couldn't refuse anymore.

Taking a deep breath, she bent down and climbed onto his back.

Ryan noticed that once Adeline was on Jasper's back, Jasper's movements became much gentler. It was a side of Jasper Ryan had never seen before.

Jasper carried Adeline and started wading through the water up the mountain. For several miles, he carefully carried her without missing a step.

Even when Ryan, Tim, and Tom were getting tired, Jasper kept moving steadily ahead.

Adeline saw the others slowing down and couldn't help but speak up, "Jasper, can you put me down? I'll walk for a while."

The closer they were getting to the old house, the shallower the water became. It wouldn't reach her wounds anymore.

Ryan and the others were tired, so Jasper must be tired too.

"I can still carry you," Jasper smiled. To prove his point, he even quickened his pace.

Seeing this, Ryan, Tim, and Tom had no choice but to hurry and keep up.

The group soon arrived at the small rural town of Frostproof.

As soon as they entered, they could see the luxurious villa at the end of the village. Clearly, that was Lily's old family home. They had finally arrived.

Adeline excitedly jumped off Jasper's back and ran towards the villa.

Although they hadn't encountered Luna on the way, Adeline thought Luna might have taken a different route. Plus, Jasper had carried her without stopping, so she didn't think Luna alone could be faster than them. Besides, the villa was quiet, with no signs of intrusion. She felt they had arrived ahead of Luna.

Adeline had even thought about how to boast to Blake and Lauren about the bravery and strength of her and Jasper's team.

Adeline rushed into the villa, only to find it empty.

The entire place was very quiet and deserted.

If it weren't for Lauren and Blake's small backpacks in the living room, Adeline would have doubted if she had come to the wrong place.

There was no one, no signs of a struggle, nothing at all.

Even Lily's phone, which had no signal, was quietly placed on the table.

The scene in the villa made Adeline's heart sink.

If Lily had taken Blake and Lauren to hide, they wouldn't have left the phone behind.

The phone, Lauren's drawing board and Blake's laptop were all left behind.

A sense of foreboding washed over Adeline, and she bit her lip hard.

Could it be that she was still a step too late? Had Luna already been here?

Jasper led his men to search the villa from top to bottom but found no one.

Jasper's expression grew darker. "Ryan, go to the nearby villagers and ask around if they've noticed anything unusual."

"Yes, Mr. Foster!" Ryan responded respectfully and took Tim and Tom to knock on doors.

Adeline sat on the sofa, feeling helpless and holding her head.

What had Luna done?

At that moment, Adeline heard a sound coming from under the sofa.
