Chapter 424 Where is Luna?
Adeline bit her lip, staring at Freya like she couldn't believe what she was hearing. "I know the guy donating the bone marrow. No way he'd back out of the surgery."
Vikram even swung by the hospital this morning to see Jasper and had a long chat with Blake, promising him a new computer and keyboard after the surgery.
Adeline thought, 'How could Vikram bail on the surgery just a few hours later?'
"There’s gotta be some mistake." Adeline pursed her lips, looking dead serious at Freya. "The bone marrow donor is a buddy of mine. No way he'd refuse."
Freya remembered Luna's freak-out on the phone earlier, saying Blake's life or death wasn't her problem, and sighed deeply. "I get it, the donor's your friend. But Miss Wilson, you gotta face the facts. The guy signed two donation agreements with our hospital and even recorded a video saying they were down to donate. But when our staff went to get them for the surgery, they freaked out and refused. We're out of options."
Adeline bit her lip. "There’s gotta be some misunderstanding."
Adeline thought, 'Maybe the hospital staff's attitude rubbed Vikram the wrong way, and that's why he bailed on the donation?'
Taking a deep breath, Adeline said, "Let me talk to him."
Freya was quiet for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, it's on you. The donor needs to get prepped tonight. If he doesn't check in by 9 PM, tomorrow's surgery might get pushed."
With that, Freya turned and left.
Watching her go, Adeline sighed and quickly pulled out her phone to call Vikram.
He picked up fast, and it sounded like he was at a bar, with a noisy background.
He sounded cheerful, "Why are you calling me now?"
Adeline frowned, hearing the noise, her face darkening. "Where are you?"
"I'm at..." Before Vikram could finish, a woman next to him snatched the phone.
The woman, holding the phone, arrogantly spoke to Adeline. "Who are you? Why are you calling Mr. Foster? Let me tell you; Mr. Foster is mine tonight. Don't even think about taking him from me!"
Before she could say more, Vikram frowned, pushed her aside, and grabbed the phone back. "She's my friend. Don't mess around!"
He then walked outside the bar, took a deep breath, and continued talking to Adeline, "What's up?"
Adeline stood still, gripping her phone tightly.
She couldn't believe Vikram was supposed to have the bone marrow surgery tomorrow! And now he was at a bar drinking, planning to hook up with some woman tonight!
"Vikram." Adeline tried to keep her anger in check. "Do you know what tomorrow is?"
Vikram furrowed his brows, asking,"What day is it tomorrow?"
He thought for a moment. "Oh, tomorrow's Blake's surgery day."
"You..." Halfway through his sentence, he suddenly remembered. He hadn't explained his identity to Adeline before, so she always thought he was the one donating bone marrow to Blake. So that's why she was calling.
"Vikram," Adeline bit her lip, trying to keep her voice steady. "Ms. Bishop just told me that the person who agreed to donate bone marrow to Blake suddenly backed out and refused to be hospitalized today. I need to know why."
She took a deep breath. "I get that donating bone marrow to Blake is a big ask, and you won't get anything out of it. But if you didn't want to do it from the start, I wouldn't have pushed. But now, my kid and I have prepped everything, and I've borrowed money for the medical expenses. If you bail now, what are we supposed to do?"
Adeline had never let on that she knew Vikram was the donor because she wanted to respect his privacy. But now, she couldn't care less.
Her words made Vikram go silent on the other end of the line.
He bit his lip, suddenly at a loss for words. The real donor was Luna.
Luna had made a deal with Jasper: if he stayed with her, she'd donate her bone marrow to Blake. But now, with Jasper in a coma and his life hanging by a thread, Luna had backed out, and no one could do anything about it. Unless Jasper woke up now.
Vikram closed his eyes and sighed.
He couldn't keep this from Adeline any longer.
Vikram's voice turned hoarse. "Adeline, I need to tell you something, but don't freak out."
Adeline frowned and sneered. "I'm already pretty upset that you won't agree to the surgery. What could be worse?"
"There is something," Vikram sighed. "Actually, I'm not the one donating bone marrow to Blake."
"What?" Adeline was stunned. "If it's not you, then who is it?"
She clearly remembered seeing Vikram coming out of the signing room with the doctor that day, and the doctor even spoke to him.
Vikram said, "By the time you got there, the real donor had already left. Like you, I was there to find out who the donor was. But you were late and mistook me for the volunteer."
Vikram's voice grew softer. "I always knew you misunderstood. I wanted to get close to Jasper and have him invest in my company, so I didn't correct you. I was deceiving you all along."
Every word Vikram said felt like a punch to Adeline's gut, making her feel both pain and shock, her legs weakening.
Adeline thought, 'If Vikram isn't the donor, then who is?'
She bit her lip, trembling all over. "Since I was late and didn't see the donor, you must have seen them, right?"
Adeline recalled the conversation between Vikram and the doctor. The doctor even told Vikram they would contact him if needed. This proved that the donor knew Vikram and had a good relationship with him!
Thinking of this, Adeline gripped her phone tightly, her voice trembling with tears. "Vikram, tell me, who is the donor? I need to find them!"
Things had come to this point; she couldn't let Blake be disappointed! Even if it cost her everything, she had to find this volunteer and persuade them to donate to Blake!
Vikram was silent.
He knew this couldn't be hidden forever.
After a long while, the man let out a bitter laugh. "Actually, this person is..."
"Luna." Before Vikram could finish, Jasper's weak voice came from behind Adeline. "Where is Luna?"
