Chapter 154 Did She Come to Me Because She's in No Position to?
Adeline looked up at him with a sneer, "How insincere!
"They've already taken their medicine and are asleep. What's the point of you going back? To wake them up and then scold them for telling me about it?
"That's right; you've said it before: you didn't want Bennett and Lauren to get in touch with me, to prevent me from interacting with them!
"But you've also said you'd take good care of them. Is this what you call good care?"
Her words were like sharp blades, piercing relentlessly into his flesh.
Jasper furrowed his brows, struggling to defend himself, "I had no idea about this!
"I just got home, and they told me they weren't eating; I was unaware they were in distress!"
He spoke with a mix of helplessness and anger, "You don't need to shift all the blame onto me and lash out!"
He paused and looked down at Adeline, trying to remain calm, "First off, I don't even know if what they're claiming is true.
"Kids might exaggerate a bit; Stella is their biological mother; she wouldn't treat them like that.
"And even assuming Stella did do it, it might just be a problem with her way of thinking and her philosophy on upbringing.
"No one would torment their children for no reason."
Adeline lifted her gaze, her eyes seething with contempt. "Who said there's none?
"Aren't you one of them, Jasper?"
Her stubborn defiance made Jasper's teeth itch with frustration. He didn't want to be too harsh, yet he couldn't stand her relentless, unreasonable arguments.
He stared at her crimson lips, itching to bite them down to silence her slanders forever.
And that's exactly what he did.
Jasper crouched down, pinning her arm with one hand and the other braced against the door, and kissed her fiercely.
The sudden kiss made Adeline's eyes widen in shock.
She hadn't expected Jasper to kiss her.
Not in a situation like this.
For a moment, her brain froze.
Then, her senses snapped back to reality.
She began to struggle wildly.
They were punching and kicking.
She fought back with everything she had, hurling insults at him.
But the disparity in strength between men and women is so vast.
She couldn't push him away.
Pinned against the door, pressed tightly, she couldn't move an inch.
But still, she fought.
"Jasper, you bastard!"
"Let me go!"
"Get lost!"
Every time he loosened his grip from her mouth, she would spit out a few infuriating syllables that enraged him all the more.
Was it the allure of her lips, the harshness of her curses, or the glitter of her tears that bewitched him?
Jasper seemed entranced, kissing her over and over, silencing her voice completely.
After what felt like an eternity, Adeline's voice grew hoarse.
Yet she continued to struggle with the little energy she had left, cursing at him with a raspy voice.
"Jasper, you freak!"
"Freak."
That word darkened his gaze instantly.
He looked intently at her face. "Do you know what real freaks are like?"
There was a dangerous edge in his eyes.
Adeline pursed her lips, recoiling. "Don't touch me!
"Go back to Mrs. Foster!
"What are you trying to prove here?"
Jasper's eyes narrowed, focusing only on her red lips in the dim, intertwined light.
"Jasper..."
As he tossed her on the couch, Adeline realized what was about to happen.
She closed her eyes, torn inside.
Reason told her to comply for the sake of Blake's illness.
But her emotions screamed that he didn't deserve her, that he was scum!
In a daze, she felt his touch.
Forget it.
She told herself with closed eyes, let it just be a dream.
In her dreams, he was still Jasper, the one she had once yearned for so deeply.
Think of it as a spiritual quest, all for the sake of Blake.
In the end, she hit his shoulder mockingly, "Isn't Mrs. Foster enough for you?"
A coldness flickered through the man's eyes.
With a mix of anger and embarrassment, he fiercely bit her lower lip, "I've been busy for the past few days, and these days she's... not available.
"Are you satisfied with that answer?"
Adeline laughed softly into his ear.
"So, you're coming to me just because she's not available?"
Jasper's gaze darkened.
He hugged her tightly from behind, burying his weary head in the nape of her neck, saying nothing.
He didn't even know the answer himself.
Maybe during the six years they'd been apart, his feelings for Stella had faded.
Maybe the one he truly loved was Adeline from six years ago, not the current Stella.
In any case, when it came to Stella, his mind told him to be close to her.
Yet his body rebelled uncontrollably.
And Adeline...
His mind screamed he couldn't approach her, couldn't be intimate with her.
His body, however, was beyond his control.
"Jasper."
After a long silence, Adeline took a deep breath and quietly called out his name.
The man behind her made no sound.
All that responded to her was the steady rhythm of his breathing.
He had fallen asleep.
Just like countless nights six years ago, he held her, breathed in the scent of her neck, and slept.
Adeline sighed softly, carefully unwinding his arms and crawling out from his embrace.
The room was bathed in dim light.
Standing under it, she looked down at his quiet, exhausted, sleeping face, her eyes brimming with loathing.
He dared to sleep so soundly, so deeply, right in front of her.
There were kitchen knives.
With one swift motion, she could avenge the almost tragic Adeline of six years ago.
She could bring an end to the endless torment she had endured these past years.
Her hands clenched and unclenched at her sides.
In the end, she exhaled deeply, pulled out a thin blanket from her suitcase to cover him, and then got up to return to the bedroom.
Blake's condition hadn't improved.
Jasper couldn't just die carelessly.
That night, because of the man sleeping on the couch, Adeline didn't sleep well.
But Jasper slept more soundly than ever.
Ever since Stella had come back into his life, he had been dodging certain issues, pretending to work late, pretending to be busy.
He hadn't had a good night's sleep in days.
The next morning, Jasper was rudely awakened by the ringing of his phone from the depths of sleep.
Stella's voice on the telephone was tinged with a hint of frustration. "Jasper, where were you last night?"
The man stretched out lazily on the couch, "What's up?"
"I was looking for you all night.
"You weren't in the study or the guest room; I thought you were working late at the office. I rushed there in the middle of the night, but you weren't there, either.
"Where did you go?"
Jasper didn't answer her question, "Did you need me for something?"
"Yeah."
Stella sniffled pitifully, "You should go online and check.
"Didn't you say that as long as all the slanderous posts about Adeline were removed online, she wouldn't release the surveillance video?
"But at ten o'clock last night, an anonymous account leaked the footage from the gallery!
"The PR firm I hired can't even get the video taken down, and now its views have tripled those of the news from yesterday!"
On the phone, Stella's voice was laced with tears, "Now everyone is bad-mouthing me!
"Jasper, what should we do?"
