Chapter 675 I Must Preserve Her Dignity
Mia's words made Adeline smile wryly.
"Maybe, in their eyes, I'm the adopted one."
When she went missing after the car accident and everyone thought she was dead, Helen and Daniel never mourned for her.
Adeline had long since gotten used to this. She took a deep breath and looked steadily at Mia.
"Thanks for taking care of my three kids. I know it's been tough."
Mia nodded. "Don't worry about it."
Because a reporter had previously published a photo of Jasper tenderly kissing Adeline's forehead, Jasper had become the target of public scrutiny.
Before coming here, Mia had volunteered to take the three children to her place. Now, Violet and Ethan were with them.
Soon, visiting hours were over.
Adeline stood up, gave Mia a deep bow, and then turned to follow the guard out.
Mia wiped away her tears and left.
Probably because of Mia's intervention, Adeline was not taken back to Brenda's cell but was instead placed in a rusty, moldy single cell.
The environment was terrible, but without the noise from the other women, Adeline could finally rest for a while. Then she had a dream.
In the dream, Lily's chest wound was still gushing blood. She smiled at Adeline.
"Remember your promise. Never give up on Jasper, no matter what."
Meantime, the light in the study at Blue Bay stayed on all night.
Jasper spent the entire night gathering all the detective experts from around the world.
But the crime scene was too well-staged.
Besides Adeline and Lily, only the fingerprints of the doctors and nurses who had cared for Lily were found.
There were no witnesses. All the physical evidence pointed to Adeline.
After analyzing all night, the dozen or so renowned detectives couldn't come to any conclusion.
However, just as Jasper was about to end the call, one detective spoke up.
"I reviewed the police's examination of the body. Lily's teeth and mouth show signs of damage from swallowing something hard. I assume you wouldn't have given her anything hard to eat recently. So, she might have swallowed something when the killer attacked. Only an autopsy can determine what she swallowed, and it might be the key to identifying the killer."
With that, the detective ended the call.
Jasper closed his eyes and pondered whether he should perform an autopsy on Lily.
Lily was a traditional person; she would never want her body to be cut open after death.
But without an autopsy, there would be no new evidence to prove Adeline's innocence.
Even if they did perform an autopsy, they might still find nothing.
Jasper spent the entire night in silent contemplation in the study.
He even considered breaking Adeline out of jail and fleeing far away with her.
But once he calmed down, he knew that was impossible.
He couldn't let Adeline live her life branded as a murderer, nor could he let the real killer go unpunished, leaving Lily's death unresolved.
Soon, dawn broke.
There was a knock on the door from outside.
"Mr. Foster. All the arrangements for the funeral are ready. After the autopsy today, Mrs. Lily Foster can be laid to rest."
Jasper nodded, then grabbed his coat and stood up.
After a night of internal struggle, he finally decided to follow the detectives' advice and have Lily's body autopsied.
Jasper believed Lily would want to see Adeline's name cleared.
Leaving the villa, Jasper got into the car with Ryan.
From Blue Bay to the police station, Jasper's black Maserati was tailed by a dozen reporters' cars.
The news that Jasper had requested an autopsy on his own grandmother dominated the front pages of all the newspapers in Radiance Springs.
When the car arrived at the police station, Jasper was immediately blocked by Nathan and Rex, who had been waiting at the entrance.
Nathan, with bruised and battered Rex, stood in Jasper's way.
"As the victim's family, Lily's only son, I refuse the autopsy!" Nathan declared, dressed in a suit and speaking righteously. "Jasper, don't think you can insult my mother's body after her death!"
Jasper narrowed, looking coldly at Nathan. "The autopsy is to gather evidence and find the real killer. Are you blocking this so insistently because it has something to do with you?"
Nathan snorted. "Find the real killer!" He raised his voice, facing the cameras behind Jasper. "The real killer was clear yesterday! It's the Adeline you were holding and kissing on the forehead! All the evidence is conclusive!"
He glared at Jasper, no longer the disheveled man from yesterday's interrogation. Now, he was cold, confident, and full of righteous indignation. "Jasper, what are you up to? Adeline killed your grandmother, yet you defended her. Adeline's guilt is clear, and now you want to autopsy Lily to find evidence to clear Adeline's name! Lily raised you from a young age! You know how good she was to you!"
He pointed angrily at Jasper. "All these years, how much did Lily sacrifice for you? Just because I brought Rex back to visit, and Lily liked Rex, the well-behaved child, you were afraid we'd take the Foster family inheritance, right? Afraid we'd take the Foster family inheritance, so you had Adeline kill Lily!"
Nathan shed tears. "Now that Lily is dead, you still want to clear that woman's name. You don't deserve to be part of the Foster family and the CEO of the Foster Group!"
He spoke passionately, full of grief, like a man truly angered by his mother's death.
Jasper narrowed at Nathan, his gaze icy. "You must have someone pulling the strings behind the scenes."
Otherwise, with Nathan's stupidity, how could he think of causing a scene at the police station entrance?
Nathan felt a bit guilty at Jasper's words. He sneered at Jasper. "What, did I hit the nail on the head, and you have no rebuttal?"
Jasper smiled faintly. He looked up, his gaze indifferent as he addressed everyone present. "Requesting an autopsy is to take responsibility for my grandmother's death."
Then, he raised an eyebrow at Nathan. "You're so afraid of the autopsy because you're afraid it will prove Adeline isn't the killer, right?"
These words made Nathan's face turn pale. He bit his lip, glaring at Jasper. "Even if there's an autopsy, the killer is Adeline, and that won't change!"
He snorted coldly. "Jasper, if you insist on the autopsy, I won't stop you, or you'll say I'm guilty. But as Lily's son, I must protect her dignity! Before the autopsy, you must sign an agreement. If the autopsy doesn't find any of your so-called evidence, you must give up all your shares in the Foster Group!"
