Chapter 689 I Am Here

Lily's memorial service lasted three whole days.

The entire town mourned.

On the day of the burial, a light drizzle began to fall from the sky.

Adeline stood quietly beside Jasper, holding an umbrella, as they both stared at Lily's gravestone in silence.

Next to Lily's gravestone was a small marker for Adeline's two lost children.

This time, the baby, born prematurely and after such a traumatic event, didn't survive.

Jasper placed the two unborn children together, vowing to protect Adeline from ever experiencing such pain again.

Beside the children's gravestone was Alice's.

After going through Alice's belongings, Adeline discovered that Alice had stopped providing information to Brandon because her terminally ill brother in the Torres family had passed away two weeks earlier.

Alice was nineteen years old. With her brother gone, she had no other family.

Jasper, feeling sorry for the lonely girl, had her buried in the Foster family cemetery.

After all, without Alice, the Foster family might have had another grave to mourn today.

The rain suddenly intensified, and the wind began to howl.

The wind drove the raindrops against Adeline, making her shiver. But she remained quietly by Jasper's side.

Feeling Adeline's coldness, Jasper, dressed in black, sighed, turned, and draped his coat over her shoulders, taking the umbrella from her hand.

"Let's go."

Adeline frowned and looked up at him. "Don't you want to stay with Grandma a little longer?"

Jasper shook his head. "Grandma is gone. No matter how long I stay, she won't come back."

He wrapped his arm around her. "If you catch a cold from standing here with me, Grandma would blame me."

Feeling Jasper's warmth, Adeline sighed softly and followed him out of the cemetery and into the car.

The black Maserati sped through the persistent rain.

Before they reached home, Jasper's phone rang.

It was the hospital.

"Mr. Foster, the specialist you asked us to contact has arrived. They've reviewed the materials we sent, and Bennett's memory loss isn't irreversible. Would you like to come to the hospital?"

"Alright."

Hanging up, Jasper looked at Ryan in the driver's seat. "Turn around and head to the city hospital."

Soon, they arrived at the hospital.

As Adeline got out of the car, she noticed a flashy red Ferrari parked at the entrance.

In all of Radiance Springs, only Mia would drive a Ferrari so ostentatiously.

Following Jasper out of the car, Adeline took out her phone and texted Mia: [Are you feeling unwell?]

During Lily's memorial service, Mia had been busy ensuring the safety of the three children, more diligently than Adeline herself.

She hadn't noticed anything wrong with Mia.

Why was she at the hospital?

Mia took a while to respond: [Nothing serious, I'm just too tired to sleep lately and came to get some meds. How did you know I was at the hospital? Are you here too? What happened?]

Before Adeline could reply, Mia rushed out of the hospital.

She grabbed Adeline's hand. "What's wrong? Is it complications from the miscarriage, or are you too exhausted, or is it side effects from the medication Sharon gave you?"

Mia's barrage of questions made Adeline smile wryly.

She pulled Mia along as they followed Jasper upstairs, explaining that the specialist for Bennett's memory recovery had arrived.

Hearing that, Mia paused, her eyes darkening.

"Memory recovery. Is that really a good thing?"

Adeline nodded. "At least, for Bennett, it is."

Since losing his memory, Bennett had returned to them but always felt like an outsider. He no longer joked with Lauren as he used to. He no longer reminded Blake to take breaks from his computer and take care of his health.

Every time Adeline saw Bennett cautiously interacting with Blake and Lauren, her heart ached. If it weren't for the mistakes she and Jasper made, he wouldn't be like this.

If the specialist Jasper found could really restore Bennett's memory, even if he didn't become the lively Bennett he once was, he wouldn't feel so distant from Blake and Lauren.

Adeline's words made Mia's eyes dim. "You're right. For a child, it is a good thing to recover lost memories."

Mia's slightly forlorn tone made Adeline purse her lips. When Molly mentioned on the bridge that Mia had once had a child, Adeline was there.

Though she tried to comfort Mia, they both knew the truth. In that situation, Molly wouldn't lie. And Mia had indeed lost about a year of her memory.

Adeline silently held Mia's hand. The three of them went upstairs together.

Several specialists were talking with Sebastian. Having been with Bennett through the toughest times, Sebastian had one request for the specialists. "If you can't guarantee memory recovery, don't subject him to unnecessary pain."

The specialists had conducted small-scale memory recovery experiments using electroshock therapy, which did restore memories but also caused significant pain.

Sebastian feared that if Bennett couldn't recover all his memories but had to endure such pain, it would be too cruel for a six-year-old who had already suffered so much.

"But Mr. Carter," the lead specialist sighed, looking intently at Sebastian. "Recovering memories involves risks. We can't abandon the attempt because of these risks and uncertainties."

Sebastian frowned deeply and slammed his hand on the table. "Your method involves electroshocking the amnesiac! If the shock doesn't work, the harm is considerable for a six-year-old child.? Can't you test it on adults first and only use it on children if it works?"

The specialist was exasperated. "Mr. Carter, there aren't many amnesiacs in the world, and even fewer who lost their memory due to drugs. We can't find another person with drug-induced amnesia, so..."

Sebastian snorted. "Then forget it!"

The specialist turned helplessly to Jasper.

Jasper hesitated for a moment, frowning. "I agree with Sebastian."

Bennett had already endured enough. His relationship with his family was slowly healing. If Bennett had to endure such pain now, it wouldn't help him; it would only make him feel more insecure.

Noticing Jasper's lack of support, the specialist sighed. "Then there's nothing we can do."

"There is no need to state that so prematurely." Mia stepped forward with a smile. "You have me."
