Chapter 40 The Doubt in the Heart

Adeline knocked on the study door, holding a cup of hot tea. Jasper was on the phone at that moment.

Upon seeing her enter, the man gave her a cold glance and continued to reprimand the employee at the other end of the phone.

"After working for so many years, don't you know the importance of respect between superiors and subordinates? If you're upset, do you expect me, your boss, to take care of your mood? If this happens again, expect to be fired!"

Adeline smirked lightly.

This man was scolding the company's employee, but in reality, he was warning her.

This was already the third time he had made her come in to deliver something to him tonight. She didn't think he needed to drink so much while working throughout the night.

The reason was probably that her coldness and neglect over the past few days made him uncomfortable.

He has always been a man who stands above others, making everyone look up to him.

Suddenly being ignored like this surely affected him.

It's not because he cared about her, but rather because of his inherent pride at work.

After setting the teacup down, Adeline turned to leave.

"Wait."

As Adeline's hand touched the doorknob, a cold voice came from behind.

"I'm tired." He leaned back in his chair. "Give me a massage."

Adeline didn't even turn her head. "Mr. Foster, I am Miss Lauren's servant, not yours. When we signed the contract, you made it very clear to me that in this house, I only needed to listen to Miss Lauren and take care of her. Making coffee and tea for you tonight was completely voluntary on my part, and you shouldn't take advantage of it."

Jasper was silenced by her retort.

When they signed the contract, he did emphasize such clauses.

However, at that time, he always felt that Adeline had ulterior motives.

So these clauses were actually meant to remind her of her position.

But he never expected that when he truly wanted this woman to do something for him, she would bring up the contract terms!

Taking advantage of her?

"Goodnight." Without waiting to see his reaction, Adeline turned the doorknob and left.

The study door closed.

Jasper stared at the tightly closed door and became even more annoyed.

Restless.

He forced himself to continue working, but Adeline's remark about him taking advantage of the situation kept ringing in his ears.

It was unbearably bitter!

He decided to go to the backyard to clear his mind.

The backyard of Blue Bay was spacious, featuring an artificial lake, a rockery, gravel paths, and a variety of green plants.

Adeline had planted many beautiful flowers and plants in the backyard.

But now, six years had passed, and those flowers and plants she had planted were long gone.

Feeling the cool breeze of the night, Jasper finally felt less bothered.

The moonlight was bright and shimmering.

Walking along the path illuminated by moonlight, everything around him was quiet, as if it were a painting.

"I'm not by your side, so take good care of yourself and don't be too stubborn, understand? Of course, I will worry and feel sad. So for my sake, you have to be good, okay?"

Jasper heard a melodious female voice from a distance.

He frowned and followed the sound cautiously.

It was Adeline's voice.

At this moment, she was leaning against a rockery in the backyard and talking on the phone.

Although he was far away, her contented appearance stirred something strong within Jasper's heart.

Perhaps it was because the night was too quiet.

Although Adeline's voice was not loud, every word was clear.

"We have been apart for so long. Of course, I miss you the most."

"I love you. Why are you overthinking?"

"Okay, okay, stop being silly. When we meet next time, I'll make you your own special cookies, alright?"

"Mm, only for you, no one else."

Jasper's eyebrows furrowed deeply.

Her voice drifted in the night breeze, ambiguous in attitude and intimate in vocabulary.

Who was she talking to?

A man, perhaps?

No wonder this woman had been cold and distant toward him recently.

So she had changed her target.

This woman, who had always harbored ill intentions toward him, suddenly shifted her attention. He should be happy.

But for some reason, Jasper couldn't feel any joy at all.

Not only was he not happy, but he was even a bit angry.

After a while, Adeline finally hung up the phone.

She sighed with relief.

That mischievous Bennett! He was staying at Violet's house and tirelessly taking care of her. He even cooked for her, despite not knowing how to cook.

Yet he had to call and tell her how lonely he was and how much he missed her. He asked her to promise to make cookies for him next time.

She had comforted him for a long time.

As she put away her phone, her sharp eyes caught sight of a tall figure standing near the gravel path in the distance.

The light in the night was dim.

But even if she could only see a silhouette, she knew it was him.

With just a silhouette, she could determine that person was Jasper.

She used to know him inside out.

Although she saw his figure, Adeline didn't really feel like acknowledging him.

But he was standing at the entrance to the courtyard.

Even if she didn't want to interact with him, she had to pass by him to go back to the bedroom.

She took a deep breath and bypassed him, ready to leave.

As she walked past him, Jasper reached out with his long arm and grabbed her wrist.

The next moment, he pinned her against him and the ornate stone pillar.

"Whose call was it earlier, hm?"

With his hand around her neck, his gaze turned cold, as if it could freeze her.

"Mr. Foster!" Adeline raised her head to meet the gaze of the man who towered half a head above her. "Who I talk to on the phone is none of your concern, right?"

"None of my concern?" The man raised an eyebrow. "Didn't you used to plot against me? In just a few days, you've changed your target. You don't even have the courage to stick with it!"

Adeline froze.

After a moment, she smirked and struggled against him.

And because she kept struggling, the man's arm held her even tighter.

"Let me go!" Adeline bit her lip and continued to struggle desperately.

"Jasper!"

In her urgency, she called his name.

Her round, big eyes, staring at him, were truly adorable.

Jasper lowered his head and looked at her rosy face and her delicate pink lips.

Perhaps it was the beauty of the night, or perhaps the person in front of him was too beautiful.

Jasper leaned down and, involuntarily, kissed Adeline on the lips.
