Chapter 769 You Have Invited a Wolf into Your House
"Jasper tried to kill... Mom?"
Adeline felt like her world had just shattered. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. It was as if all the blood in her body had rushed to her head in an instant.
She grabbed the servant's shoulder at the door, her grip tight. "What did you just say? Are you messing with me? This can't be true..."
How could Jasper try to kill Mom?
The servant bit her lip, looking distressed. "Ms. Phoebe, why would we joke about something like this? Mrs. Phoebe is in critical condition and they're trying to save her... Mr. Foster has already been arrested by the police."
Adeline almost collapsed. She clung to the doorframe, forcing herself to stay upright. "How could this happen..."
"Stop asking how it happened."
At that moment, Oliver came rushing up the stairs. He knelt down in front of Adeline. "Get on."
Adeline hesitated for a moment, then climbed onto his back. In her current state, she couldn't get downstairs on her own.
Oliver carried Adeline down the stairs. As she looked ahead, her eyes were vacant. "Oliver, what exactly happened..."
Oliver sighed. "Mom couldn't stand seeing you, the kids, and Jasper separated, so she asked me to bring Jasper to the hospital. She wanted to talk to him. After I brought Jasper to the hospital, Mom said she wanted to have a good talk with him, so I went downstairs. Half an hour later, a nurse called me saying Mom was in trouble. I rushed upstairs."
He paused, his voice hoarse. "She had a fruit knife stuck in her chest and was in shock from blood loss. By the time I got upstairs, she was already in the emergency room, and they've been trying to save her ever since. The police came and investigated the scene. The fingerprints on the knife had been wiped clean, leaving only Mom's. It was clear the attacker wore rubber gloves. The hospital's hallway surveillance didn't show anyone else entering Mom's room, but Jasper went in twice. The second time he came out, he was covered in blood. The knife in Mom's chest was from Swan Villa, I recognized it. Dennis said the rubber gloves' pattern on the knife handle matched a batch he recently bought, but a pack was stolen this morning."
Oliver's words left Adeline breathless. As they left the Phoebe Mansion, she sat in the back seat of the car, watching the falling leaves outside the window, feeling a chill all over her body. All the evidence pointed to Jasper killing her mother.
She remembered Jasper's question that morning when she left Swan Villa. "You said you came back to the Phoebe family for Zara. If Zara dies, will you come back to me?"
At the time, Adeline thought Jasper was just speaking out of impatience. But now... had he already planned to kill her mother?
After all, she had heard Dennis say that the servants at Swan Villa had been replaced by David. There were no more spies from Brandon there. Who else could easily take a fruit knife and Dennis's rubber gloves from Swan Villa? And around the time Zara was attacked, only Jasper had entered her room twice. He even came out covered in Zara's blood.
Adeline felt a chill down her spine. She had loved Jasper for so many years and knew how ruthless he could be in business. But she never thought he would use those tactics on her mother, Zara!
Sitting in the back seat, Adeline hugged herself, shivering. After a while, she looked up at Oliver, who was driving. "Oliver, Jasper... he was arrested?"
"Yeah." Oliver frowned, nodding first, then shaking his head. "He went to the police station voluntarily. Not to confess, but to report a crime."
Adeline paused, her brows furrowing tightly. "Report a crime?"
"Yeah." Oliver took a deep breath. "He reported that Daisy killed Mom."
Adeline turned around quickly. "Daisy?"
"Yeah." Oliver squinted. "Jasper said when he went back to the room the second time, Mom was already attacked. With her last breath, she told Jasper it was Daisy. Then Jasper rushed to find a doctor and went to the police station."
Oliver sneered as he drove. "I don't like Daisy either, but Jasper's lie is too far-fetched. Daisy only went into Mom's room briefly when I left and came out quickly. She was in other departments of the hospital the whole time and rushed over when she heard about Mom. Yet Jasper accused her of killing Mom."
The car stopped in front of the hospital. Oliver took a deep breath. "I used to think Jasper was family, my cousin from my mother's side. So I always gave him the benefit of the doubt, even considered letting him take you away. But now... he doesn't deserve it."
Oliver's words made Adeline's heart ache as if an invisible hand was squeezing it. She used to think she knew Jasper. But now... she realized she didn't know him at all.
Since he arrived in Oceancrest City, she couldn't see through him anymore. She was no longer the most important thing in his heart, yet he kept entangling her, wanting to take her away. And now, to keep her from staying with the Phoebe family, he even tried to kill her mother!
From the hospital's first floor to the emergency room door, Adeline's heart felt like it was being clawed at. When did Jasper become this kind of person?
As Adeline and Oliver reached the emergency room door, Daisy rushed up.
A slap echoed through the hallway!
Oliver and Howard's eyes widened instantly. One man shielded Adeline, while the other pulled Daisy back. Howard frowned as he held Daisy's stubborn body. "Daisy, what are you doing?"
"I'm standing up for Mom!" Daisy struggled towards Adeline, cursing. "It's all her fault! If it weren't for her, Mom wouldn't be like this! You brought a wolf into the house! Adeline, you're a sinner, a bringer of misfortune!"
