Chapter 1006 More Than Acquainted, Practically Becoming Rivals in Love
The two men exchanged pleasantries and then withdrew their hands.
Austin couldn't resist showing off Emily's status in front of Eugene. "Hey Eugene, my girlfriend's a big deal at the Hart Group. She's the CEO there."
Eugene knew Austin was bragging about his connection to a wealthy socialite. Though he felt a mix of jealousy and disdain, he still had to offer his congratulations. "Wow, Austin, you're really lucky. Your girlfriend's both rich and beautiful."
"None of our classmates from our graduating class can compare to you."
Austin loved hearing such compliments. He immediately beamed and held Emily's hand, saying, "Oh, come on, I'm just grateful to have met Emily."
"She's beautiful and talented, and she's been a huge support for me."
Austin spoke with great satisfaction.
Emily felt a sudden wave of complex emotions. She didn't quite like Austin's insincere flattery. But then again, aren't most men like this?
Maybe he genuinely liked her, which is why he was so proud?
Emily couldn't help but feel annoyed at herself for overthinking. She was really going crazy, and it was all Lucien's fault.
She couldn't let him influence her thoughts anymore.
"So, you're really fortunate," Eugene said enviously.
To be honest, Austin wasn't particularly handsome. He wasn't ugly, but he definitely wasn't striking, and he didn't have much of a height advantage either. Eugene couldn't understand how someone as stunning and charming as Emily, a socialite, could be interested in a guy like Austin.
They seemed to come from two different worlds.
Most importantly, Eugene wondered if this socialite knew that Austin had been engaged to another woman before.
Not many people knew about it, but it wasn't a complete secret.
So why would a socialite be interested in a man who had broken off an engagement, wasn't particularly good-looking, and had an average background?
Eugene was truly puzzled.
On the other hand, Lucien, the guy who had asked for his help earlier, seemed like a much better match for her.
He had heard that Lucien was also from a wealthy family.
And he was willing to do things for her quietly?
Eugene suddenly imagined a high-society romance.
Austin might end up getting dumped.
Thinking about this, Eugene felt a bit better and wasn't as jealous anymore.
While the three of them were exchanging pleasantries, Elodie came out of Joseph's office with Douglas.
Both of them looked quite pleased, so it seemed like everything was fine.
"Dad, how did it go? What did the doctor say?" Emily immediately let go of Austin's hand and walked over to them.
Elodie spoke first. "Emily, everything's fine. The doctor said as long as he stays calm and keeps a good mood, it won't recur for at least ten years."
Hearing this, Emily felt a wave of relief wash over her, and the tension she had been feeling instantly dissipated. "That's great."
Douglas was in good spirits, too. "Since everything's fine, let's go out for dinner later. Dr. Bailey can join us, too."
Eugene, feeling awkward since he hadn't really helped, quickly made an excuse about having academic research to attend to and declined the dinner invitation.
Douglas didn't insist.
Eugene left first, and Austin went to see him off.
The two of them walked down from the third floor to the hospital entrance.
Austin, feeling triumphant, said to Eugene, "Eugene, thanks for your help this time. I won't forget it."
Eugene gave a fake smile and said, "Austin, there's something I don't know if I should tell you."
"Just say it."
"It wasn't me who helped this time," Eugene said directly.
After all, he couldn't take credit for something he didn't do.
Austin's face immediately darkened. "It wasn't you? Then who was it?"
"Lucien, do you know him?"
Austin's previously triumphant expression froze. Know him? He was practically his rival in love.
