Chapter 1028 Why Do They Separate Even Though They Have a Child?
On the scorching highway.
Lucien's Mercedes kept speeding along.
After more than an hour, the car finally exited the highway and entered the neighboring state. Another 40 minutes of driving brought them to a somewhat rundown ten-story apartment building.
Lucien parked the car, unbuckled his seatbelt, and turned to Emily, saying, "We're here. Ready to get out?"
Emily glanced at the dilapidated building outside and suddenly felt a wave of hesitation.
She wanted to bury her head in the sand, avoiding the confrontation.
So she sat there, lips pressed together, not moving to unbuckle her seatbelt or get out of the car.
Seeing this, Lucien leaned over and unbuckled her seatbelt for her, saying, "You can keep deceiving yourself, but let's go see him first."
Emily continued to press her lips together, her delicate jawline tense, and looked at Lucien's handsome face with a hint of irritation. "Even if he has a fiancée, I'm not coming back to you."
She glared at him, her expression fierce.
Lucien didn't find her scary; instead, he found her inexplicably cute.
His thin lips curled into a smile. "You can be mad at me, but let's go see him first, okay?"
"I'm not going," Emily said, feeling inexplicably annoyed and starting to argue with him.
"Fine, then I'll carry you out," Lucien said, reaching out as if to lift her.
Emily didn't need him to carry her. She hurriedly pushed him away, saying, "Don't touch me. I'll get out myself."
"If you had done that earlier, I wouldn't have touched you," Lucien continued to smile.
They got out of the car, one after the other.
Lucien walked ahead, with Emily following behind.
At the apartment entrance, Lucien turned to look at the pretty woman standing in the blazing sun and asked, "Thirsty? Want some water?"
"No," Emily said stubbornly, but then she started licking her lips.
She was indeed a bit thirsty.
The temperature was high today, and she hadn't had any water during the drive.
But she had already spoken, so she wouldn't ask him for water.
"I'll go buy some," Lucien said, noticing her licking her lips.
Emily remained silent.
After buying two bottles of water, Lucien led her further inside.
They finally reached a playground in front of one of the apartment buildings. Lucien stopped and said to Emily, "See that young woman over there playing on the slide with a toddler?"
Emily followed his gaze.
Her eyes focused on the woman, who looked a bit disheveled. She might have been too busy taking care of the child to tidy up, and her dress had a large water stain.
Her hair was messy, but despite her appearance, the love in her eyes for her child was irreplaceable.
"She's a teacher, too. Because of Austin, she almost got fired from the school. She's been on leave recently to take care of her child," Lucien said slowly. "She could have chosen not to have this child. She's still young and has a decent job."
"But she's kind-hearted and didn't want to end a life, so she kept the baby."
That was the greatness of a mother's love.
Emily bit her lip slightly. "If they have a child, why did they break up?"
"Because he wants to go back to New Future City. If he takes this woman and the child with him, he might feel burdened, and he wouldn't have the chance to meet you or climb the social ladder," Lucien scoffed at the mention of Austin.
A man who could abandon his fiancée and child for power—Lucien didn't believe Emily would be so blind as to stay with him.
"How do you know?" Emily bit her lip again, her fingers clenching slightly.
After a moment, she turned to look at him, her eyes filled with sorrow.
"How I know isn't important. What's important is... do you still want to be with him?" Lucien turned to look at her as well, the afternoon sun casting a golden glow on their faces.
"Emily, I admit I have personal reasons for pursuing you, but aside from that, I don't want you to be deceived by him. You know he doesn't have the ability to help your dad, right?"
Emily knew that her dad's treatment was thanks to Lucien.
But her mind was in turmoil.
Her parents both liked Austin. If they broke up, how would she explain it to them?
"I'm really confused right now. I want to go home," Emily said, releasing her bitten lip and turning to leave.
Seeing that woman earlier made her realize that she and Austin were impossible.
But she didn't know how to start the conversation.
Lucien glanced at her and didn't force her. He silently followed her.
