Chapter 191 Unbroken Promises
Violet's grip on Brady's hand remained firm until they had reached the privacy of the apartment corridor. Only then did she hastily release him.
Brady, however, was not a man easily deceived.
The frantic clasp of her hand had not gone unnoticed. Brady, far from being a fool, recognized the silent plea.
As Violet's hand slipped from his, he turned his gaze, still warm despite the circumstances, upon her flustered expression. "What has caused Miss Devereux so much fear?" he inquired.
"I'm not scared," Violet shot back, holding his intense, penetrating gaze.
The man was overwhelmingly assertive. Even the most casual eye contact with him was overpowering.
Violet mustered all her strength to maintain her composure and suppressed her rising panic.
She continued, "Isn't it a bit presumptuous, Brady, to show up uninvited at this late hour?"
Brady's stare remained unbroken, his lips curling into a slight smirk as he responded, "I was merely checking on the little girl I rescued when she was kidnapped. Is that an issue?"
"Are you concerned, Miss Devereux, that I've come to abduct the children?"
The insinuation in his last question made it increasingly challenging for Violet to engage in a civil conversation. She bit her lip before replying, "Why would I worry about Brady kidnapping his own children? Any woman in town would be thrilled to have children with you."
"Surely, Brady, you wouldn't be interested in my cousin's children, would you?"
Brady's eyes narrowed, a flicker of resolve passing over them. Suddenly, he leaned in, his towering figure descending like a looming wall, enveloping Violet within his intimidating presence. His hand finding support on the wall beside her, effectively trapping her within his vicinity.
His voice, deep and commanding, held an added layer of authority, "I want to redo the paternity test."
At his words, Violet's eyes widened in disbelief. 'Does he still harbor suspicions, to the point of wanting to redo the test?' she wondered, her gaze locked on his advancing face, her heart pounding with fear.
As her pulse quickened, Violet pinched her palm sharply, the jolt of pain grounding her. Regaining her composure, she tightened her lips and said, "Can I decline your unreasonable request, Brady?"
"We had an agreement, remember? Once the paternity test was done, you wouldn't bother us anymore." Violet's tone hardened, her words laced with contempt. "Surely, as a CEO, you wouldn't stoop so low as to break your word like a common swindler? Has your integrity fallen that far?"
Violet was aware that her incendiary words could provoke his wrath, but she felt cornered and was left with no other option.
She couldn't risk losing her children. She would never hand them over to him.
Brady looked down at her, his face inching closer, the space between them now barely a breath's width. He was so close he could have kissed her.
She was trapped, feeling the warmth of his breath on her lips, her face. His breath carried the faint scent of tobacco and an intense mix of wood and musk, radiating masculinity. Violet instinctively bit her lip.
As she reached out to push him away, she fell right into his trap. Her palm met his solid chest, and he seized her hand, pinning it down. His lips were so close they almost brushed hers as he whispered provocatively, "Tell me, where did I break our agreement?"
"I came to see Nicole, didn't I? I saved her and wanted to check on her. Does Miss Devereux disapprove?"
"Or does Miss Devereux think so little of her daughter’s savior that he isn’t worthy to visit her?"
His argument was sound, leaving Violet without any sort of rebuttal and left her slightly embarrassed. Her cheeks flushed, she was at a loss for words.
But no matter how tongue-tied she felt, she remembered her intention to send him away, "Brady, I appreciate your concern, but now that you've seen her, can you leave?"
Brady, however, was in no hurry, his gaze still locked on her. Suddenly changing the subject, he mentioned the evening's date, "How was your date with Arthur?"
