Chapter 147 She Dared to Accept President Jack's Invitation
"No," Violet Devereux replied, not wanting to dwell on the subject, "Mr. Green, I've got to get to work."
"Okay." Max, far less domineering than Brady Hall and actually quite considerate, left the soy milk on her desk and returned to his office.
Violet looked at the carton of soy milk and felt even more distressed.
She really was tempted to quit her job.
But then she thought about the incredible opportunities at JK Associates and couldn't bear to leave her career behind.
While Violet wrestled with her dilemma, Aiden's bodyguard—a man she hadn't seen for several days—returned.
Aiden was always lavish in his pursuits. Today, he sent Violet a designer handbag worth $50,000 from Louis Vuitton, complete with the usual bouquet of red roses.
The bag was from a different high-end brand this time.
As the bodyguards handed her the bag and flowers, they also gave her a card from Aiden, inviting her to dinner that evening.
Violet intended to refuse outright, but then she remembered that Brady Hall had plans with her tonight.
After weighing her options, she accepted Aiden's dinner invitation, though she intended to make it clear in person that she wouldn't entertain advances from anyone.
Seeing Violet accept the invitation for the first time, the bodyguard immediately phoned Aiden to relay her decision.
Aiden smiled at the other end, amused by the thought that despite her reputation for pride, hadn't Miss Devereux just complied for the sake of a $50,000 handbag?
Of course, the news of Violet accepting these gifts quickly spread through the company, eliciting a wave of sour comments among the workforce as they went back to their tasks.
Violet ignored them and dialed her aunt's number; it was her birthday, but with the day's developments, she wouldn't be able to join the family dinner and suggested celebrating tomorrow instead.
After settling that, Violet dove back into her work.
Later, after a busy stretch away from her desk, she received a call from Lady Hall, who hadn't been in touch for some time.
"Miss Devereux, are you free? Care to join me for dinner?" The elderly woman's enthusiasm was as infectious as ever.
She still had a soft spot for Violet Devereux's work.
"Granny, I'm sorry, but I'm swamped today. Can we catch up another time?" Violet contested with Brady Hall's persistence, yet she couldn't deny the kindness Lady Hall had shown her, treating her with such warmth without any hint of disdain.
Thus, she couldn't bring herself to ignore the old woman entirely.
"Alright, dear. Do make sure to drop by when you can, okay? I'll whip up some fish head stew for you," the old lady invited with infectious enthusiasm.
It seemed almost as if Lady Hall would turn up at JK herself.
But upon hearing this, Violet Devereux felt a twinge of melancholy and conflict within her heart, though she still managed a promise, "Yeah, I'll stop by when I'm free."
"You get back to work, dear. I won't keep you," Lady Hall reassured.
"Okay, Granny. Bye," Violet ended the call, then massaged her forehead, trying to dispel the rising irritation before diving back into work.
Evening arrived swiftly, with sunset painting the sky outside the company's floor-to-ceiling windows. The brilliant hues of dusk hung in the horizon like a fiery tapestry.
Violet glanced at the time. Anticipating a visit from Brady Hall, she snuck out half an hour early under the guise of a family emergency to escape the inevitable encounter.
Sure enough, by leaving ahead of schedule, she successfully evaded Brady. He had just wrapped up a meeting, timed perfectly to conclude before the end of the day at JK.
As his meeting came to an end, Violet had already been gone from JK for thirty minutes, and not to return home.
She had left to meet Aiden for an evening rendezvous.
The revelation sent a dark shadow across Brady Hall's eyes. His chiseled fingers clenched unconsciously, heavy with implication.
Very well, Aiden dared to pursue his woman? Did he think himself invisible?
