Chapter 1001
Camilla slammed the car door shut and hurried over to the little girl, whose big eyes were fixed on her.
"Ma'am, do you know how to get to Golden Sun Orphanage?"
The girl's voice was soft and sweet, like caramel—delightful and never too much.
Camilla's heart melted. She crouched down and said gently, "Of course I do. How about I take you there?"
The little girl nodded. "Thank you, ma'am!"
Camilla's heart softened even more. She couldn't help but pick up the little girl and carefully place her in the back seat. After fastening the seatbelt, she asked softly, "Sweetie, why did you leave the orphanage alone?"
"Debra gave me a dollar to buy cotton candy for her," the little girl blinked and said. "Ma'am, can we get the cotton candy before going back?"
Camilla smiled as she held the steering wheel. "Sure, but you're too young to be out buying cotton candy by yourself."
"But Debra really wants it," the little girl twisted her fingers. "Debra even said I could have a lick."
Camilla's heart ached.
Why was such a sweet girl left at the orphanage, and why did she have to share someone else's treat?
Camilla glanced at the obedient child in the back seat through the rearview mirror, feeling a sharp pain in her chest.
The little girl didn't seem to notice her distress. She blinked her big, grape-like eyes and said, "Ma'am, you're even nicer than the director. I really like you."
Camilla smiled gently. "I like you too. What's your name?"
"My name is Cherry Hayes. Everyone says I'm as likable as a cherry, so the director gave me this name. But..." Cherry swallowed, "I've never had a cherry before."
Camilla's fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
She had never interacted with such a young child before. She didn't know if all kids were as adorable as Cherry, but she was truly captivated by Cherry's big, watery eyes.
She suddenly had the urge to adopt Cherry. But she knew she couldn't adopt an orphan without being married.
"Cherry, how about I take you shopping? You can get whatever you like."
Cherry nodded.
With that, Camilla parked the car in front of the nearest supermarket.
Cherry's eyes sparkled. "Ma'am, I just want some cotton candy. Debra is waiting for me."
"It's okay. I'll drive you back soon," Camilla said, holding her soft little hand as they walked into the supermarket. She bought almost everything a child might need.
Cherry frowned. "I really don't need so many things. The orphanage has everything."
If the orphanage really did, how could Cherry have grown to be over three years old without ever tasting a cherry?
