Chapter 372

This was his biological mother, and no matter what, she wouldn't harm him.

He let go and obediently took his seat in the back.

The car sped through the streets, not stopping even at red lights.

"Mom, what do you have to tell me? You can stop the car now and tell me!" Keith protested, feeling more uneasy.

Emily floored the gas pedal as if to vent all her fear and unease.

The car shot through the streets and quickly left the city's bustle behind, following a state road further and further away until other vehicles and pedestrians became scarce.

Twenty minutes later, the car finally pulled over to the side of the road.

They were in an industrial area, surrounded by abandoned factories and rusted machinery haphazardly placed on the roadside. Under the dim streetlights, the scene was eerie and terrifying.

"Get out."

Emily leaned against the car, her gaze dark and cold.

Keith glanced outside at the desolate landscape and the chill of the autumn night. He bent to get out of the car, his lips pressed tightly together, exuding an icy aura.

"Keith, you always call me 'Mom,' but you've never truly loved or respected me. You tolerate me because I gave birth to you, right?" Emily turned her head and glared at him.

Keith was silent for several seconds before responding, "Did you bring me to this place just to ask me that question?"

"If—just if," Emily said with a twisted smile, "What if I'm not your biological mother? What if these past four years have been a lie? Would you still call me 'Mom'?"

Keith froze. "What do you mean by that?"

"It's a hypothetical question," Emily crouched down, resting her hands on his shoulders. "If you weren't born to me if you didn't come from my womb, but I took care of you for four years, would you still respect me as you did in the past?"

Keith narrowed his eyes.

No one asks such a question without a reason.

Moreover, his mother had made a big show of bringing him to this deserted place to ask it.

This meant the question wasn't meaningless.

He parted his lips and said slowly, "What answer do you hope to hear from me?"
For the past four years, Emily had upheld the maternal mantle, though she never provided round-the-clock care. "I've done everything a mother should do without missing a beat," she stressed, squeezing his tender shoulders. "As the saying goes, Rraising a child is an even greater kindness than giving birth to one. I raised you, so I ought to mean more to you than even your birth mother!"

Keith's fists slowly clenched as he fought to keep his bubbling emotions under control, speaking carefully, "What you're saying is you're just my adoptive mother?"

"No, it's just a hypothetical..." Emily's eyes widened in alarm, "Keith, your dad now suspects that I'm not your biological mother, and he wants to kill get rid of me. Can't you talk to him, get him to spare me... I truly am your and Owen's mother; I carried you both for nine months and gave birth; I love you so much; how could I be an imposter..."

Keith stared at her for a full minute.

He wasn't a fool. Just by the look in Emily's eyes, he'd already guessed the truth.

He lifted his hand and started to pry her fingers off him, one by one.

"Keith, Keith, you have to believe me. I really am your biological mother. You're the only one who can save me now! Please, Keith, I'm begging you to save me; if you don't, your dad will really kill me..."

"You are not my mother!" Keith articulated sharply, "You are definitely not Owen's and my mother; this is not a hypothetical; it's the truth."

Emily's eyes contracted in shock.

KeithThe boy was too smart to fool.

She had to hold onto this final hope for salvation. But she clung to this last straw for salvation.
