Chapter 152
Owen bashfully lowered his head, his ears tinged with red.
Ivan couldn't help but let out a snort.
This kid was always trying to play the angel; when did he start getting shy?
"Let's go, time to head home," Ivan said coldly.
Owen's contented smile froze on his face.
He gripped Haley's sleeve with a pitiful look, "Haley, do I have to go?"
Haley patted his head, "I've got work soon, and Todd and Angela need to go to school. What are you going to do here all alone?"
Owen's spirits dropped like a burst bubble, "So, can I come over again sometime?"
"You can, but—" Haley glanced at Ivan, "You need your daddy's permission. No running off on your own. If you can't do that, you won't be allowed over anymore."
"I can do it! I'll make sure of it!" Owen asserted, thumping his little chest, "You can trust me, Haley. I won't sneak out again!"
Ivan was speechless.
He had scolded, punished, and was close to laying hands on him, but the boy never seemed to learn.
Escaping the house over and over, he always turned the Winston family home upside down.
Yet now, at Haley's word, the boy promised to turn over a new leaf. Why didn't he believe it would last?
"Goodbye, Haley!"
Owen waved goodbye before turning to leave, pulling Ivan's hand as they walked out the door.
"Don't miss me too much, okay? Next time, I'll bring you over again..."
Ivan was dumbfounded.
Where did the kid get the idea that he was reluctant to leave?
Owen was wearing Todd's pajamas, while Ivan was still in yesterday's clothes.
Being someone with an extreme preference for cleanliness, he couldn't stand wearing the same outfit two days in a row.
He drove back to the Winston family estate.
As the father and son entered the mansion, a figure came out to greet them.
"Ivan, Owen, where were you guys last night? Why weren't you at home?"
Striding out in her high heels, Emily's face was etched with anxiety.
She had arrived at the Winstons' since six in the morning, only to find the house deserted. Alfred mentioned that Keith had left for the office at five, and both Ivan and Owen had not come home all night.
Though she didn't live with the Winstons, Emily knew Ivan valued his family too much to stay away for no reason. This lack of control over the situation left her feeling utterly uneasy.
"What business is it of yours where we go!" Owen snapped, reverting to his devil-may-care rogue attitude. Casting a scathing look at Emily, he stormed upstairs to his room.
"Ivan, look at how Owen speaks to me…" Emily bit her lip, her voice choked with distress, "I'm his biological mother, yet he has never shown me a shred of respect, always disregarding and overlooking me…"
Ivan was all too familiar with such complaints. In the past, he would insist that Owen show his mother respect. But after witnessing how Owen behaved around Haley, Ivan realized that it wasn't that Owen didn't understand politeness; Emily simply didn't merit his courtesy.
With a nonchalant glance at Emily, Ivan asked, "Why are you here so early?"
