Chapter 340
"Daddy, Mommy likes this," Angela suddenly said, propping her chin with her hands. Her big eyes shifted back and forth between Ivan and Haley, and Haley felt a bit embarrassed under her daughter's gaze.
She intended to take care of Owen and Keith, but suddenly, she found herself being watched by the kids like some love spectacle...
"Here, try this. I washed it for you," Ivan placed the washed item in Haley's bowl.
Haley reluctantly took a bite, feeling the gaze of five pairs of eyes on her. She looked up and forced a dry laugh. "It's delicious."
Of course, it was delicious; she cooked it herself. What did it have to do with him washing it?
Dinner ended amidst the lively atmosphere. Haley, thinking about Todd's mood, suggested they head home. Owen nudged Ivan towards the door. "Daddy, don't forget to give Mommy a goodbye kiss."
Owen's voice was both too loud and too soft but just loud enough for Haley to overhear.
Haley's scalp tingled with numbness as she gripped her two children's hands and walked briskly toward her car.
"Wait a second."
Ivan's voice came from behind, prompting Haley to quicken her pace, fearing that he might catch up to her.
"Aren't you going to need your car keys?"
Ivan caught up with her in a few quick steps, his voice laced with a hint of teasing. "Haley, why are you running away so fast?"
Just the sound of her name made Haley's heart skip a beat in disarray.
She turned around, snatched the keys from his hand, and, with a feigned composure, said, "There's no need to see us off. We're leaving now. See you tomorrow."
However, Ivan suddenly caught hold of her arm and reached up to remove a leaf from her hair.
When his hand reached out, Haley instinctively dodged. A flash of fear arose in the depths of her clear eyes, but it was fleeting.
She recovered quickly, simply saying, "Thank you."
Then she opened the driver's door, sat down, and the car sped away from the Winston family estate.
Ivan held the leaf in his hand, his brow furrowing slightly.
He had just helped her get a bit of dirt out of her hair; did she need to be that avoidant?
And that fleeting fear in her eyes, what was that all about?
...
Haley parked the car in her home's driveway, stepping out just as Todd, holding little Angela's hand, stood on the porch.
"Angela, why don't you go inside and play 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' for Mommy to hear?"
Haley walked over and gently touched the girl's hair.
Angela nodded and headed into the house, where the sound of a cheerful piano piece soon filled the air.
Kneeling in front of Todd, Haley whispered, "Todd, I'm now with Mr. Winston. Are you very unhappy?"
Todd pursed his lips before speaking, "Mommy, you know the kind of relationship Mr. Winston had with Emily, so why are you with Mr. Winston?"
"In reality, Keith and Owen are..."
Haley opened her mouth as secrets nearly slipped out.
She caught herself in time, choosing not to continue.
Todd always tended to overthink from a young age. If she had told Todd about this, he would surely not have stopped thinking about how to help her take custody of his brothers.
It was something she had to plan herself carefully. Todd only needed to focus on growing up happily.
