Chapter 883
Ivan leaned back, all chill, "Your mom's swamped, no time for you. Todd, I'll shoot you something later. See if you can crack it."
Todd nodded, "Got it, Dad."
After hanging up, Ivan sent over the command extraction program Haley whipped up to Todd. He knew his kid was a whiz at hacking from their past gigs together.
Haley was the coding queen, and Todd? He was the king of cracking systems.
Todd's phone buzzed with an email.
Keith peeked over, "What did Dad send?"
Todd opened it and frowned. "It's some program code. Dad wants me to crack it."
He took his phone upstairs, yanked a laptop from under the bed, and plopped down on the carpet. Keith hovered behind, eyes glued to Todd's screen.
The room filled with the clatter of keys. As Todd dug deeper into the code, his face got more intense. After half an hour, he finally stopped.
Keith asked, "What kind of program is it? Did you crack it?"
Todd shook his head, "The server's too far from Watertown; can't send the attack command."
He paused, "If I'm right, it's some biochip that messes with the human brain."
"Why does Dad want you to crack this?" Keith frowned, "Didn't he say we were done with this stuff after the Hinterlands?"
Todd pressed his lips together. He had a hunch but didn't want to believe it. It was too wild.
But if he was wrong, how could he explain Mom moving out or why Dad suddenly wanted him to crack this sketchy program?
"I'll ask Dad." Todd pulled out his phone and called Ivan. Ivan was still cooking, making a simple meal with extra care. As he stirred the eggs, his phone buzzed on the counter. He wiped his hands and answered.
"Dad, this program's tough to crack," Todd said, "It's a biochip program. Why do you want me to crack this?"
Ivan's jaw tightened, and he said calmly, "One of my guys got a Bio-intelligent Chip from Quillan."
Todd's eyes narrowed, "Got it. I'll figure it out."
After hanging up, Todd's eyes were sharp, filled with thoughts, making his emotions hard to read.
Keith stared, "Todd, what's on your mind?"
Todd didn't speak, just pressed his lips together and opened his laptop. He browsed a dark web forum, his expression growing more serious.
Todd looked at Keith and said softly, "Keith, some top hackers on the dark web got hired by Dad for big bucks and brought to Watertown. Everyone's speculating about what's going down."
