Chapter 725
"How come you didn't know?"
Ava put on a fake look of surprise.
The Winston family kept this under wraps; it didn't even make the news.
If Ava hadn't overheard Brenda talking to a private detective that day, she wouldn't have known Haley was missing.
Not just Haley, but the four kids were gone too.
Brenda hired a private detective to find Haley, but they came up empty.
Ava called Thomas to spill the tea: Haley, the woman he liked, possessed ambitious traits and soon after getting married, she ran off with another guy..
"Brenda's looking for Haley on the down-low, but no luck," Ava said, sounding all regretful. "You two were so close, I thought maybe you ran off with her."
"Ava, who Haley runs off with is none of your business," Thomas said coldly, curling his lips. "Ivan hasn't even called me. Why are you so worried?"
"Ivan hasn't shown up at the Winston Group for a week. He'll come looking for you soon," Ava snorted. "Thomas, stay away from Haley. If you piss off Ivan, the Ellenstein Group will suffer. It is just a friendly warning. Don't waste my goodwill."
Thomas hung up on her.
Holding his phone, Thomas's eyes glinted coldly.
Martin hadn't been to the company for a week; he might've tracked them toHinterlands.
If Martin found Haley, he might use the kids to drag her back to Watertown.
Thomas needed to feed Martin some false info.
Dinner was ready, and the seven of them sat around the table. The TV in the living room was still on, broadcasting the news.
"Haley, your cooking is amazing. No wonder they say Country H is a foodie's paradise. I've been here two days and already gained six pounds," Karl said, munching away.
Amid his chatter, Haley heard a loud explosion from the TV.
Her attention snapped to the news.
"This afternoon at four, there was unrest at the southeastern border of Hinterlands. Dozens of insurgents caused chaos, injuring many civilians... Leonardo led the special forces and prevented a war... But the insurgents had explosives, and Leonardo, at the front, was injured by shrapnel. His condition is still unknown..."
Haley suddenly put down her fork.
Angela's eyes welled up. "Daddy's hurt."
"Don't call him 'Daddy' just yet." Thomas frowned. "Until we confirm Leonardo's identity, he's a danger."
Owen blinked. "Can we go see him? I can tell if he's really Daddy."
"You all stay home. I'll check it out," Haley said, standing up and taking off her apron.
Thomas raised his hand to stop her. "It's dark outside. It's not safe, especially after the conflict. Leonardo's surrounded by guards. You think you can get close? Wait for news; go tomorrow."
Haley looked out the window.
Maybe the explosion damaged the power lines; the streetlights were out, and it was pitch black.
Going to Hinterlands now was a bad idea.
Haley had to swallow her worry and sit back down, keeping an eye on the news.
But the signal was weak, and the news blacked out after a few minutes.
This place was far from modern civilization, lacking social order, filled with danger and death.
