Chapter 311
<Chapter>Chapter 311</Chapter>
Haley pulled up to the villa, spotting Alfred standing outside the fence and Owen by his side before she even got out of the car.
Her crimson lips pursed as she pushed the door open and stepped out.
"Haley."
Owen stood still, shuffling his feet, his large eyes cautious and wet.
Usually, he would run to her with open arms, but this time, he didn't dare move, as if afraid of her anger.
A sting spread slowly through Haley's heart as if nibbled by a tiny insect, sour and aching.
"Mr. Owen, what are you..."
She barely started when Owen cut her off. "Haley, please call me Owen."
His voice carried a note of longing.
Haley's heart wasn't made of stone. She exhaled. "Owen, why are you here so late?"
"I missed you." Owen's tears began to flow uncontrollably as he spoke. "You can hit me, yell at me, but please don't ignore me..."
He tried not to cry, to swallow back his tears, biting his lip.
Angela, sitting in the car, clueless about the scene, quickly jumped out and ran to Owen's side, tenderly wiping away his tears.
"Angela..." Owen clung to Angela's hand, a faint glimmer of light finally appearing in his eyes.
"Go wash your face first." Haley stepped forward, grasping Owen's hand. "Come on, inside the house."
As Haley held his fingers, Owen felt a surge of sadness. He remembered how kind Haley used to be to him. He didn't understand how things had changed so suddenly and what had happened.
"Mommy, let me help Owen wash up," Todd said, his voice sounding sweet and obedient.
Owen resisted the entire notion, but Todd leaned in close and whispered, "Don't you want to know why Mommy stopped coming to your place?"
Owen looked up sharply, biting his lower lip. "Haley, can you let Todd help me, please?"
Haley's heart ached as she locked eyes with Owen, his eyes brimming with tears. She also needed some quiet time, so after patting each child's head, she turned and walked into the kitchen.
Todd pushed open the bathroom door, and Owen stepped in, closing it behind him.
"Tell me, Todd! What is the reason?" Owen's voice carried a note of urgency.
"Because you're Emily's son," Todd said, looking at him with steady eyes.
"What does it matter whose son I am?"
"I know you like my mom and my sister, but Keith doesn't," Todd spoke deliberately. "Your older brother Keith has launched covert attacks on my mom's company, laying traps to try to bankrupt it. He would do anything for Emily, and it's just a matter of time before he turns his attention to my sister."
"That's impossible!" Owen shook his head in denial. "Keith couldn't do such things! He really likes Angela; he's bought her so many gifts. He would never hurt her!"
"If you want to know if he's done these things, why not ask him?"
Todd turned on the tap, filled the basin with warm water, and haphazardly wiped Owen's face with a washcloth.
Owen walked out of the bathroom, completely dazed, feeling as if he had been struck by lightning.
Then, he left without saying a word.
Alfred hurried up to him. "Owen, you're leaving just like that?"
