Chapter 688
Keith racked his brain but couldn't figure out why Haley would take them and flee overnight, erasing all traces along the way.
Haley must be doing this to avoid Ivan.
But why would Haley need to avoid Ivan?
Even if it came to a divorce, she wouldn't need to take their four kids and flee the country.
Todd was about to speak when his phone suddenly vibrated.
It was his personal communicator that he always carried with him, a device even Haley was unaware of, which explained why it hadn't been tossed in the trash.
Todd opened the communicator and saw someone had sent him a private message.
Leonardo: [My equipment shows that you and milk-loving Owen seem to be near Hinterlands.]
Todd narrowed his eyes.
During their last mission, they formed a temporary task group. They could see where each member was by clicking on their profile. Only someone who was bored or had ulterior motives would check others' profiles.
Leonardo was such a busy person; why would he be tracking his and Keith's whereabouts?
Todd had a good impression of this person, but the feeling of being spied on by Leonardo made him feel a bit resistant.
Todd replied indifferently, "Passing through on a business trip."
Then he turned off the phone.
Todd looked up at the other three kids beside him and said, "If we don't ask, Mommy definitely won't tell us what's going on. Even if we ask, Mommy will come up with excuses. So this time, we have to unite, or we'll always be kept in the dark."
Owen nodded. "How do we stay united?"
Todd continued, "Owen, you say you miss Daddy and want to go back. Angela, you cry along with Owen. Keith, you subtly probe, and I'll ask directly."
Haley had no idea about the kids' plan.
Half an hour later, she and Thomas arrived at the edge of the Hinterlands.
The security here was very tight because there had just been a skirmish, and two consecutive leaders had been assassinated. Therefore, foreign vehicles were not allowed to enter; they had to be searched at the gate before being permitted to pass.
Once one walked in from the entrance, he would find the environment didn't differ significantly from a typical foreign small town.
There were many street vendors along the road, selling various items, including contraband. The bustling street was filled with people in suits or moving swiftly, making it impossible to distinguish between those affiliated with the black forces and ordinary individuals.
Haley lowered her voice and said, "This place doesn't seem as chaotic as described in the news."
"That's because the newly appointed leader has implemented new policies, banning many illegal activities," Thomas said in a low voice. "A few years ago, when I came here with my dad for business, my backpack was snatched right on the street. I witnessed a woman being dragged into a roadside bush. This place was quite chaotic until recently, about half a month ago."
"It seems the new leader wants to improve the law and order here," Haley remarked.
Thomas snorted, "There are no good people who can thrive in this place. I suspect someone is up to no good again."
As Haley and Thomas conversed, they entered an alley where two young men with blonde hair had been waiting. Upon seeing Thomas, they walked over and gave him a friendly punch on the shoulder, looking very familiar with him.
"Come on, let's eat first."
Thomas had them lead the way, and the four of them walked straight into the nearest restaurant.
The restaurant was nicely decorated, and it was at peak hour, with many people dining in the hall.
