Chapter 711
Todd's phone buzzed, grabbing everyone's attention.
He glanced at the screen. "It's K."
Haley let out a breath. "Answer it. See what's up."
The call connected, and Leonardo's icy voice came through. "K's with me. If you want him back, come see me."
The call ended abruptly.
The room went dead silent.
After a moment, Todd said, "Mom, I have to go."
Haley's lips tightened. If K was caught, Todd could be in danger, too.
She stood up. "I'll go. I can get Karl out."
"Mom, Leonardo and I are friends. I already sent K instead of going myself. If you go now, that's another lie," Todd said seriously. "Even family trust breaks after too many lies, let alone acquaintances."
Haley was quiet. Todd was right.
If she hadn't sent Karl, Todd might have already sorted things out with Leonardo.
But with Ivan already in trouble, she couldn't risk another child.
"Mom, trust me. I can get Karl back and come home safe," Todd said, determined. "Just wait for me."
Haley wanted to argue but couldn't find the words.
If she went with him, it might make things worse. Leonardo knew her.
"Mom, I'll go with Todd," Keith said. "I don't know Leonardo well, but I can talk to him. With me there, you don't have to worry."
Haley was even more worried. Todd and Keith were just kids, meeting the world's most notorious villain.
"Haley, this is the best option," Thomas said. "It's safer for them to go alone."
Haley sighed. "Be careful, look out for each other, and get Karl out fast. I'll find another way to get information about your daddy."
Thomas sent two bodyguards to escort Todd and Keith to Hinterlands.
It was their first time outside in four days.
The streets were busy, with no sign of the evil they were heading into.
At the border, guards stopped the car.
The bodyguards escorted Todd and Keith to the core military area, where they were stopped again.
Todd spoke up. "I'm the boss of the Deross family, and this is Owen. Tell Leonardo we're here."
The guards exchanged looks, and one went inside to report.
After a bit, he came back. "The leader's in a meeting. Wait in the living room."
Todd nodded. He and Keith walked in, leaving the bodyguards outside.
They entered the mansion's living room, faces blank.
Isabel was on the sofa, peeling grapes. She tossed one into her mouth and saw the kids.
Her eyes widened. She thought, 'These two looked just like Leonardo!’
