Chapter 138 Ripples of Intrigue
Haley was left speechless for a moment.
If she remembers correctly, Emily is infatuated with good-looking men!
If Mr. Robinson was even slightly handsome, she might have reluctantly believed Ivan's words.
But based on her understanding of Emily, there's no way she would be interested in a bald man.
Ivan looked at Haley with increasing disdain in his eyes.
He took a sip of his drink and decisively changed the topic, saying,"How is Angela doing?"
After that woman took the little girl away last time, she didn't even make a phone call.
He was a little worried about Angela's condition.
Haley initially wanted to say it was none of his business.
But last time, it was indeed this man who took Angela upstairs, bathed her, and changed her clothes.
She pursed her crimson lips and said quietly,"She's fine."
"I know a specialist in treating children with autism. Would you like to take Angela to see him?" Ivan spoke in a low voice. "Angela is speaking now, which indicates a breakthrough in her autism. We should seize this opportunity to treat her properly..."
"What did you say?" Haley raised her eyelids. "Angela can speak?"
Ivan's jaw tensed. "What? You didn't even know your daughter can speak?"
His words carried a hint of sarcasm once again.
Haley furrowed her brow. "Since she was born, she has never spoken a word."
From her expression, it didn't seem like she was lying.
Even if a mother is busy, she couldn't possibly not know that her daughter can speak.
In other words, yesterday was likely the first time Angela spoke.
For some reason, Ivan felt a hard-to-put-into-words sense of achievement when he witnessed her speaking for the first time.
He paused for a moment before continuing.
"When I brought her back to the office yesterday, I asked the secretary to give her a bath. She said the word 'no' loudly. There's no way I could have misheard," Ivan said calmly.
Haley's expression turned serious. "Mr. Winston, are you sure about what you heard? Please do not deceivie me."
"Why would I lie about a child?" Ivan replied indifferently. "Besides, there's no benefit for me in lying to you."
Haley's fingers tightened. She suddenly lost interest in attending the banquet. All she wanted now was to go back and ask Angela if she can speak.
"Children with autism tend to be closed off and rarely speak. They need specific environments and specific people to relax their guard," Ivan continued. "Although it may sound presumptuous, I can't help but say that your daughter seems to rely on me. Perhaps that's why she spoke in front of me."
Haley wanted to deny his words, but after some thought, she gave up. Indeed, Angela seemed to have a strange fondness for this man, even though Haley, as her mother, couldn't understand why.
"If you trust me, you can bring Angela to my office tomorrow, and we can recreate yesterday's scenario," Ivan said, clinking glasses with her before leaving.
Haley stared at his back, lips pursed tight. This concerned Angela, and she didn't want to waste any time. She bid Justin goodbye, lifted her dress, and left the banquet hall.
Half an hour later, the car stopped at the entrance of the villa. Haley opened the car door and was about to go in when someone suddenly rushed out from the flower bed.
She was startled and quickly dodged to the side. The figure crashed to the ground, crying loudly.
"Haley, why didn't you catch me? It hurts so much... I'm in so much pain..." the person wailed.
"Owen?" Haley quickly crouched down to pick him up. "What are you doing here?"
