Chapter 257
"Good day, I'm Garrett Leonard, Ms. Haley DeRoss’s defense attorney. I'll be taking full responsibility for the custody case concerning her two children from here on out. Please direct any future inquiries to me," Garrett announced as he handed out a black, foil-stamped business card.
He spoke with a decisiveness, his demeanor stern and solemn, an aura of authority slowly radiating from him.
Jeremy frowned in irritation. He wasn't part of the legal community and hadn't heard of Garrett's big-shot reputation.
However, he had spent a fortune on Graham, one of Cuenca's most renowned attorneys. With Graham on his side, the case was sure to be a win.
The only uncertainty was whether Ivan would get involved. His involvement could complicate things...
"I hear you wishes to visit the children, right?" Garrett said with a slight smile, adjusting his glasses. "The law grants visitation rights to parents, but only with the custodian's consent. Taking the children without the guardian's knowledge is akin to kidnapping. If you fancy a trip to the police station, Mr. Jeremy, you are more than welcome to try."
Jeremy felt a chill under Garrett's piercing gaze.
Looking away, he scoffed, "If Graham says I can see them, then I will. You don’t think you can scare me off with a few words, do you?"
Graham coughed awkwardly. His previous remarks might have worked on someone with little legal knowledge. However, it was utterly pointless to flaunt in front of Garrett. It was like a novice showing off in front of a master craftsman.
Lowering his gaze, Graham said, "Garrett, I was being hasty. Mr. Jeremy and I will take our leave."
Jeremy was puzzled. ‘When did I agree to leave? I want to see my kids! How can I be denied even a visit?’
Graham tugged Jeremy along toward the main road, not stopping until they were a safe distance away before he let out a sigh. "Mr. Jeremy, I'm sorry, but I might have to drop your case."
"What did you say?!" Jeremy glared at him furiously. "Didn’t you assure me you were a hundred percent certain you could win back custody of my kids? Didn't you boast about your professional ethics, promising to fight for me no matter what? Is this how you handle business after taking my money?”
Graham was at the receiving end of Jeremy's tirade, unable to muster a defense.
He was just down on his luck to have ended up on a case against Garrett.
Back when Garrett had started out, he had single-handedly taken down a powerhouse team of international attorneys, earning a legendary reputation. From that case onward, Graham had become an ardent admirer of Garrett.
He was well aware of the chasm between his own abilities and Garrett's. Going head-to-head with Garrett wasn't just about crossing paths with his idol. It would also expose his incompetence.
After all, he was one of the sharpest lawyers in Cuenca, and getting crushed would be a blow to both his pride and reputation. It might be better just to withdraw.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Jeremy, I'll compensate you triple the amount."
Graham and Jeremy were negotiating when Haley's car pulled up to the preschool. She raised an eyebrow in surprise.
'Is it all resolved that quickly? Is Garrett really that formidable?'
Had she known, she would have driven faster.
Getting out of her car, she approached as Garrett offered her a slight smile. “Ms. Haley, Mr. Jeremy won't be bothering you or the children for a while. Should he persist, don't hesitate to call me."
