Chapter 958
"Let's all crash together," Keith said, grabbing another blanket from the cabinet and tossing it on the bed. The four kids squeezed into Owen's room and slowly drifted off to sleep.
The night outside got darker before it started to lighten up again. The morning sun rose gently, bringing in a new day.
Owen was the first to wake up. He jumped out of bed, shouting, "Mommy's back!"
He dashed out the door, only to find the first floor empty, with just Alfred wiping down the table. "Alfred, is Mommy up yet?"
Alfred looked up. "Mr. Winston and Mrs. Winston went out last night and haven't come back yet."
Owen's face went pale. "Mommy hasn't come back."
He turned and rushed back into the bedroom. The blankets were neatly folded, showing no signs of being slept in. His parents really hadn't come back last night.
"Don't worry," Keith said calmly, "I'll call Daddy first."
Ivan's phone buzzed. He stood on the misty road, his deep eyes darkening.
He must've been standing there for a while because his neck felt stiff. He slowly answered the phone and put it to his ear.
Keith asked, "Daddy, where are you and Mommy?"
"Stay home and wait for us to come back." Ivan hung up and slowly moved his fingers. Last night, he went out looking for her, searching every nearby road but came up empty.
He figured she must've found a quiet place to hide.
She wanted some peace, so he'd let her have it. Ivan stood on the road leading home, waiting for Haley from night until dawn.
But Haley was still nowhere to be found.
The ominous feeling in Ivan's heart kept growing. With the cold winter wind sweeping in, he felt chilled to the bone.
Ivan looked out again. People were coming and going on the distant street, but he still couldn't spot Haley.
He took a deep breath and dialed a number. "Send all surveillance footage within ten miles of the Winston Villa to my email."
He headed straight to the office.
Ivan opened several computers to watch the footage simultaneously and finally spotted Haley. She boarded a bus with an indifferent expression.
Ivan pressed his lips tightly and his fingers flew over the keyboard. Soon, he hacked into the bus's surveillance system, tracking Haley along the bus route.
The bus stopped in the suburbs of Watertown, where Haley got off. She walked along a poorly lit road.
She looked so thin, like a gust of wind could blow her over. The winter night was freezing, and she was only wearing a down jacket and a hat, making her look even more frail and slender.
The surveillance cameras were about 65 feet apart. Every time she walked 65 feet, he had to quickly switch to the next camera's footage.
Ivan watched Haley walk down the entire road.
The eastern sky began to lighten. It was already 4 a.m., and Haley was still walking. It was like she didn't feel tired at all.
