Chapter 240
Clutching his back, Louis gasped in pain. He had anticipated a confrontation, but being hoisted up and slammed to the ground was still a shock to his system. He almost pitied himself.
"Louis, you all right?" George hurried over to help Louis up. "Your back will sure be broken. I've got some ointment in my office. Let me help you."
When Louis heard his back was supposedly 'broken,' his face turned thunderous. "My back is broken? What the hell are you talking about? Haley isn't getting away with treating me like this. This isn’t over!"
His retort was nothing more than a weak attempt to regain some dignity.
Grimacing in pain, he struggled to his feet, limping toward the elevator.
George, puzzled, asked, "What the heck just happened?"
"George, did you see that? Haley just took Louis down, and Louis is furious!" the secretary said gravely. "Louis is known not just for his playboy antics but also for being a real tough client. Those who fought against him would not live a good life. Haley is toast. Mark my words. Star Technology won't live to see another day."
"Is that so?"
A skeptical look crossed George's face. For some reason, Louis seemed to quiver in Haley's presence.
...
Haley sat at her desk, firing up her computer to dig up information from last night's cruise ship party. She pulled up the guest list and scrutinized each one, cross-referencing pictures until she found him.
Jeremy Chase.
Her eyes narrowed as she entered the name into the search bar.
The internet had plenty to say about Jeremy. He was the CEO of Chase Group, a thirty-four-year-old married man with a ten-year-old son.
Chase Group was an electronics manufacturing firm. It was pretty well-known, positioned within the influential circle in the capital, which gave them a leg up when collaborating with foreign enterprises. Jeremy's visit to Cuenca was all about securing investments. And the reputation of a robust business in the capital was a big draw, luring investors from Cuenca and beyond.
Haley’s lips pressed into a thin line.
Five years ago, at twenty-nine, Jeremy was already married with a five-year-old son. Yet, this man took advantage of an eighteen-year-old girl in Cuenca, ruining her life. Yet, he maintained the facade of the perfect husband and father in the media, drawing praise and admiration from the public.
The hypocrisy made Haley's stomach turn.
She slammed her laptop shut, a tumult of emotions in her head.
For years, she had deliberately avoided the topic of the children's biological father. Whenever Todd inquired, she deflected.
However, Jeremy had reappeared. If Jeremy discovered the existence of the two children...
She couldn't bear to think of the dreadful consequences. An inexplicable sense of foreboding gripped Haley.
Before the school day ended, she drove to the preschool. She parked across the street and quietly waited for her kids to leave.
With ten minutes left before the end of the school day, a black sedan caught her attention. A glance revealed the driver stepping out, reaching the back seat, and opening the door. A middle-aged man in a suit emerged.
The sight of his face hit Haley like a bolt of lightning.
It was Jeremy Chase.
She had spent the whole day digging up information on him, and now here he was.
'Why is he at the preschool? Does he know about the kids?'
Haley felt a shiver run through her body. The nightmare from five years ago, the one that had abruptly resurfaced, was sending her into a state of utter panic. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her emotions.
Five years ago, she was eighteen, afraid of every plausible threat. But now, at twenty-three, a mother of two, she couldn’t afford to be fearful. No matter Jeremy's intentions, she was determined to face the challenge head-on. Whatever happened, she would protect her children.
Taking out her phone, Haley dialed Heidi's number.
