Chapter 163

Emily's eyes were icy, her fingers slowly curling into a fist.

It wasn't enough that she'd been pushed out of the boardroom, but that wretch Haley had the audacity to target her friend!

"Emily, the whole company's buzzing...saying the DeRoss Group will soon be Haley's domain. They're even claiming she's better suited as the heir than you," Mia said through clenched teeth. "It's just too bad I can't stay at the company any longer, or I'd make sure to give a piece of my mind to anyone who speaks ill of you."
"I won't let you get fired. Just wait and see."

Emily hung up the phone, her perfectly made-up face seething with anger.

"That little snake, Haley! She’s playing the game on a whole other level," Flora said, hearing the conversation loud and clear. She slapped her hand on the table and said icily, "Emily, we can’t just sit around and wait for disaster."

Biting her lip, Emily replied, "Mom, you think I don't want to just eliminate that little wretch? But Keith has his people watching the DeRoss family. No matter what we do, Keith will find out. I don't want to ruin the image he has of me."

Flora, with a contemplative expression, said, "Haley's been back in Cuenca for so long and still hasn’t discovered that those two bastards are alive. It proves she'd never suspect her 'deceased' son has transformed into Owen Winston. So, that secret should be safe for now. But the real issue is control over the DeRoss Group. If we let Haley cement her position as the head of client services, the general manager's spot will soon be out of reach."

Emily nodded. "Dad’s on my side, but Haley’s too sly, winning over the shareholders without making a sound. Dad's hands are tied."

"Then we need to turn to the matriarch," Flora scoffed. "Let her have a little chat with Haley. Tell her to stop her mischief! Our people inside the DeRoss Group can’t be purged by Haley."

"Alright."

Emily and Flora made their way downstairs to visit the family matriarch.

Madam DeRoss was frail, spending most of her days in bed. The sun was kind that day, and she sat on her room's balcony basking in the warmth.

"Grandma..." Emily choked out, her tears starting to cascade down her cheeks as Madam DeRoss turned to look at her.

"Emily, what's wrong?" Madam DeRoss stood up, and the maid, Mrs. Zhang, hurried over to assist her, "Madam, please be careful."

"Grandma, I didn't want to bother you with such a trivial matter, but my sister has crossed the line!"

Emily played up her teary, woeful appearance, deliberately rubbing her eyes red.

Mrs. Zhang couldn't help but purse her lips.

The old lady was already in poor health, intentionally kept in the dark about the serious turmoil within the DeRoss Group's board. And here was Emily, coming to her to tattle. If the old lady ended up in the hospital over this, would Emily feel a shred of remorse?

But judging by Emily's superficial display of crocodile tears, any sense of guilt seemed highly unlikely.
Sheila feigned concern as she said, "Mrs. Patterson, it's time for your medication. Why not take it now?"
With her medicine taken, Mrs. Patterson would likely doze off, conveniently avoiding further conversation.

"Grandma, I won't bother you anymore. Just focus on getting better," Emily said, her lips quivering. "It's my own fault. I made so many mistakes in the past, and that's why my sister is targeting me now..."

Sheila remained silent.
