Chapter 263 A Dinner of Affection and Secrets
"Angie, if something is bothering you, you can tell me," Ivan said softly as he sat on the couch with Angela cuddled in his lap. His gaze toward her was tender.
Angela pursed her rosy lips and took his rough hand in hers. She was about to spell out her feelings when Haley emerged from the kitchen.
Haley, with a plate in each hand and a sunny smile on her face, announced, "Dinner's ready, come and eat."
Owen's attention snapped toward her, and he bounded over. "Haley, I've missed you so much!"
Quickly setting down the dishes, Haley bent down to lift Owen, her laugh gentle and warm. "We just saw each other yesterday, sweetheart. How come you missed me already?"
"My teacher taught me a phrase today. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Not seeing you for a day feels like ages. I wish I could be with you every second!" Owen hugged Haley's neck and planted a kiss on her cheek.
A wave of tenderness swept over Haley. She returned the affection with a kiss on Owen's face, which nearly lifted him off the ground with joy.
It didn't matter if Alfred didn't like him anymore, or even if his father's affection had waned, as long as Haley still loved him.
He wrapped his arms around her neck once again and kissed her cheek.
Haley's laugh was music to his ears.
Todd's lips were pressed tightly together, a sign of his worry. He wondered if his mother would still be as close with him if she ever found out Owen was Emily's son...
Before getting to that, he had to be certain whether Ivan truly was his and Angela's biological father. Todd looked down and discreetly slipped a short black hair into his pocket.
"Come on, dinner's ready," Haley announced, laying a chicken wing into Owen's plate. "I made your favorite fried chicken wings, along with five other dishes and a soup. Eat up." Owen could be a fussy eater, but chicken wings were his weakness, and she made sure to cook plenty.
"Thanks, Haley!" Owen beamed, gratefully biting into a chicken wing and squinting in satisfaction. Then suddenly, he dropped the wing and bolted upstairs.
Ivan frowned. "Where are you off to?"
"I need to get Keith!" Owen sprinted into the study.
Alfred slapped his thigh. "That's right, how could I forget about Keith? We have guests today. I should've called Keith earlier to have him come home sooner."
Once upstairs, Owen dialed Keith's number, "Keith where are you? Didn't I tell you yesterday that Angela was coming over for dinner? If you don't hurry, she'll be gone!"
Keith was at the piano store, lounging on a leather couch, the picture of nonchalance. "Got some things to take care of here," he replied with a cool detachment.
"Big bro, I know you're not fond of Haley, but don't let your bias toward her prevent you from liking Angela. She's been a bit out of sorts today, not really engaging with me, but if you come back, she'd be overjoyed."
"And why would she be overjoyed if I returned?" Keith pressed his lips together.
"Because you look just like Angela's real brother, man. She adores that Todd fellow, and if you resemble him, she's bound to like you too!"
Keith fell silent, contemplating. It seemed like he was just a stand-in.
"I'll be home in about half an hour," he said, with a touch of indifference.
"Cool, we probably won't be done with dinner by then. Hurry up, Keith!"
