The sky was just beginning to lighten when a call woke Haley.
She fumbled under her pillow with half-closed eyes, grasped her phone. After a few attempts, found the answer button.
"Haley, you can't still be sleeping?" came Thomas's voice, tinged with urgency.
Haley rubbed her hair, her voice hoarse. "It's just after six in the morning. Why wouldn't I be sleeping?"
"There's been a major development. I can't believe you're still asleep!" Thomas's voice rose in pitch, "I've seen news about you overseas. You really make a splash. You're barely back home and already hitting the news headlines. With your knack for being the trending topic, you should switch to being a movie star. Our company has investments in the entertainment industry. We could make you a star, an award-winning actress..."
"Shut up."
Haley's ears ached from his ruckus.
She sat up, throwing back her covers, and spoke coolly, "Let me check out the news first. Bye."
She opened her browser, and before even searching for her name, local news updates popped up relentlessly.
"Cuenca's most beautiful woman gave birth abroad five years ago to twins, says a source close to the matter. She has a boy and a girl!"
"Shocking! The father of Cuenca's most beautiful woman's twins is none other than the CEO of Chase Group, Jeremy Chase!"
"The belle of Cuenca and the Chairman of Chase Group—untold stories you can't miss."
Haley's face darkened instantly when she saw the news.
She had been meticulous in safeguarding her children's privacy, successfully scrubbing all their information from public view.
Yet, against all odds, they had been exposed.
There was nobody but Emily who she could think of that would do such a thing.
Taking a deep breath, she clicked on the news. There was a photo of her picking up her kids from preschool, with Jeremy also in the frame.
"Word has it that Jeremy and Haley are locked in a custody battle, at odds over the guardianship of their children."
A string of comments followed the news.
"Whoa! The Belle of Cuenca actually has kids? You'd never guess she's a mom of two!"
"Wasn't she spotted five years ago in a wild one-night stand with some mystery man? It's not surprising she has kids! But the real tea is that the guy from five years ago was Jeremy! The model husband and father, always gushing about his wife and kids in interviews. Who would've thought he cheated five years ago!"

Haley scrolled through the comments, her mind gradually calming down.
Jeremy, an entrepreneur who had found success at a young age, was accustomed to the limelight far more than she ever was as the so-called Belle of Cuenca.
This scandal was bound to hit him harder.
She glanced at her watch. At 7 a.m., the sky was just beginning to lighten, and the city was still at rest, all but the online community reveling in the frenzy.
If this mess wasn't handled promptly, it was only a matter of time before the children got dragged into the flames.
Right now, the focus was on Jeremy, but once this initial burst of interest faded, it would be soon that reporters started sniffing around the preschool.
