Chapter 878
"Hey, Haley, hang tight. I'll take you there once I'm done with these dishes."
Ivan, rocking an apron, grabbed the plates from the table and started scrubbing them in the sink.
Haley sat at the table, chin propped on her hand, eyes glued to Ivan's back with a dreamy look.
The dude was tall and built like a tank, with a back that screamed strength. His legs, wrapped in those dress pants, were just perfect.
She suddenly felt her throat go dry, her mind wandering to places it probably shouldn't.
Since moving in, she and Ivan had been crashing in separate rooms. Even when they were close, they didn't dare to kiss; the most they'd do was hug and touch a bit. The main reason? Fear of setting off the chip in her body.
Ivan turned around and caught her staring, his Adam's apple bobbing. Fighting the urge that hit him, he said in a rough voice, "Don't look at me like that."
Haley blushed and quickly looked away. Ivan was already on the edge; she couldn't push him any further.
Ivan pulled the car out, and Haley hopped into the passenger seat. They headed to the Lumi Family's place together.
"Ivan, you've been stuck with me these past few days, and your work at the Winston Group must be piling up. Go handle that and come pick me up in an hour," Haley said with a smile as she got out of the car.
Ivan had wanted to go in with her, but seeing her like this, he knew she wouldn't budge. He sighed, "Alright, I'll be back in an hour."
After Haley walked into the Lumi Family villa, Ivan didn't leave. He parked the car on the roadside nearby and pulled out his laptop to tackle some work.
Inside the Lumi Family house, Bark sat at the desk, his face twisted with anger.
Hollis, legs crossed, had a smug look on his face. "She really pulled out all the stops to win. But we can't blame her; she grew up in another family without proper guidance. Luckily, only we in the Lumi Family know about this for now, so it won't become a public scandal."
"Hollis, we don't even know who did this yet. Isn't it a bit much to say that?" Bryan said coldly. "Better not to talk crap without proof."
Hollis sneered, "Dad, look at Bryan. He used to be a good kid, but now he's been tainted by Haley, who's just an illegitimate child. No matter how high she climbs, she can't change her rotten core. She'll never be respectable! If Bryan keeps hanging with Haley, who knows what he'll turn into!"
"Hollis Lumi, watch your mouth!" Cauth snapped, using her full name. "My son's and daughter's upbringing is none of your business."
Ava chimed in angrily, "My mom is Bryan's aunt. Why can't she have a say? Uncle Cauth, you trust Haley way too much."
"Enough!" Bark cut in coldly, stopping the bickering. His eyes, sharp despite his age, scanned the room. "We'll get to the bottom of this once Haley gets here."
Ava muttered under her breath, "Like she'd ever admit to stealing the company's money."
"What are you all yapping about? Sounds like a party!" Haley strolled in calmly, a slight smile on her lips. Her smile was like a winter flower, cold but stunning, making it hard to look away.
A flicker of jealousy flashed in Ava's eyes.
