Chapter 324
Ivan didn't expect her to agree so easily, and a slight smile appeared on his face. "All right."
Seated in the back, Keith chimed in, "Father, are we going to pick up Angela from preschool?"
"Mm-hmm, we're picking up both Angela and Todd," Ivan replied, turning his head toward Keith. "If you don't want to go, feel free to hop out anytime."
Keith was silent.
He hadn't given any impression that he didn't want to go.
"I've taken care of everything at the office, so let's go," Keith muttered sullenly.
The car slowly moved forward, Keith turning to gaze out the window, the passing scenery a blur as his inner turmoil grew heavier. He couldn't quite pinpoint his mood at the moment; he just felt irritated.
Twenty minutes later, the car pulled up in front of the preschool.
There were still five minutes left before school was out.
Heidi hung up the phone and walked over to Todd, smiling. "Todd, your mom just called me. She's been held up this evening and won't make it to pick you and Angela up."
Todd, ever so well-behaved, responded, "That's okay. My sister and I can take the bus home by ourselves."
Heidi chuckled. "Oh, Todd, you're such a little grown-up. Even though you're smart and sensible, your mom still worries about you and Angela taking the bus alone, so she's asked Mr. Winston to come get you guys!"
Todd was momentarily surprised. "Mr. Winston?"
"That's right, your Mr. Winston. I believe he's been to preschool before..." Heidi's cheeks flushed slightly.
Last time, when Jeremy had pretended to be Todd and Angela's father, Ivan had come with a lawyer to remove him forcefully.
Ivan, with his unforgettable features, was embedded in Heidi's memories. She wondered about the relationship between the two kids and him.
Soon, the bell rang and Heidi led the children to the preschool entrance.
As they stepped out, they saw two figures standing by the entrance—a tall one and a smaller one.
Ivan, dressed in a black suit from head to toe, was bathed in the orange glow of the setting sun, which softened his otherwise chilling presence. His hawk-like eyes, prominent nose, and exquisitely thin lips were all mellowed by the golden light.
Keith, dressed in a sharp black suit like Ivan's, had the same icy composure in the lines around his eyes.
The preschool kids were dumbfounded when they saw them.
"Wow, that uncle looks just like Todd," one of the kids exclaimed.
"Is that your dad, Todd? He's really handsome!" another chimed in.
"Whoa, Todd, is that little boy your brother? You guys are like twins!" said a third, in awe.
The children's voices bubbled up with excitement and surprise.
Heidi glanced over and belatedly realized that Todd did bear a striking resemblance to that father-son pair. To the uninitiated, they could easily be mistaken for family.
Todd pressed his lips together, about to clarify, when Angela suddenly let go of his hand and dashed off like an arrow released from a bow.
Ivan kneeled and opened his arms, scooping up the little girl who flung herself at him.
The normally reserved child unexpectedly hugged Ivan's neck and planted a gentle kiss on his cheek. Then, she shyly buried her head in his chest.
Ivan stiffened, a sense of fulfillment washing over him like never before.
From a distance, Todd watched the scene unfold. Then, he said his goodbyes to the teachers and classmates, and then slowly made his way to Ivan's side.
