Chapter 149
Ivan had been killing time downstairs for nearly an hour when Haley finally emerged leisurely from Angela's room.
Catching sight of him, Haley paused in surprise, "You're still up?"
Ivan didn't respond immediately. It was only ten o'clock. He wasn't a child to be tucked into bed so early.
"I just had a chat with your son," he said in an even tone.
Descending the stairs, Haley picked up scattered toys as she asked, "What did you guys talk about?"
"Your son is bright," he paused, considering his words before adding, "To put it mildly, the kid's a prodigy."
Haley's hands froze mid-task. "How did you come to that conclusion?"
The fact was, Todd had taken an immense interest in computer coding before he was even three, casually writing code that actually worked. She'd been astounded back then, promptly taking Todd for an IQ test the following day.
The results had revealed Todd's intellect to be at least twice that of his peers.
By the time Todd was approaching four, she tested him again, the findings even more astounding. She could still remember the day they left the lab, the examiner had chased after her, " Mrs. DeRoss, your son is extraordinary. If you would consider letting him train at our facility..."
She had declined.
She didn't want Todd to be some prodigy, nor did she want him training in secrecy from a young age. She wanted him to grow up like any other child—happy and carefree.
"He's only four and he understands books on logic; he's not like other kids," Ivan said quietly. "Regular preschool isn't the right place for him. You should consider hiring a private tutor."
Haley placed the last block into a bin, her lips pressed into a thin line, "I think preschool is just fine for him."
To grow up like any other child, free from burdens far beyond his years—not to mention, it gave him a chance to look out for Angela.
Ivan furrowed his brows. Did this woman truly not comprehend the extent of her own son's intelligence?
Perhaps, he could be on par with Keith.
After a pause, he continued, "I can introduce you to a few teachers..."
Haley looked up at him earnestly. "Didn't Owen attend preschool, Mrs. Winston?"
Ivan nodded, "The Winston kids, they don't need preschool."
Owen didn't, and neither did Keith.
Owen tried it for a while, saw no progress, so we withdrew him.
"Todd isn't a Winston, so he needs it," Haley countered coolly.
Children love to play—it's in their nature. No child likes being cooped up alone in a room to study.
Ivan frowned slightly. "Genius is often accompanied by loneliness. At preschool, he'd just feel out of place. I saw the divide between genius and average when Keith turned three—a chasm that's simply insurmountable."
"Keith?" Haley blinked, "What's his relation to Owen?"
"He's Owen's older brother," Ivan replied nonchalantly.
Only those close to the Winston family knew about the affairs of the two Owens.
And yet, he never expected to discuss his sons so matter-of-factly with this woman...
Haley's fingers stiffened slightly.
Older brother...
So Owen had a brother.
Meaning, that woman had given Ivan two children and still hadn't managed to marry into the Winston family.
Haley’s gaze towards Ivan now carried a trace of disdain.
Falling for it once and having a son could be chalked up to carelessness.
Twice?
