Chapter296

The delicate scent of the woman swiftly withdrew, and Ivan felt an unexpected emptiness, a sense of loss overcoming him.

He raised his hand, stating matter-of-factly, "You forgot about my hand."

He presented his right hand to her.

Lowering her eyelids, Haley responded, "You should probably apply it yourself, Ivan. I need to get the vegetables ready and start cooking."

She turned away, flustered, picking up a kitchen knife and chopping the vegetables haphazardly.

His eyes fell upon her frazzled state, and Ivan couldn't suppress a soft chuckle. This woman, always so composed and independent with a mature and distant soul, now seemed as flustered and out of place as a girl.

That chuckle reached Haley's ears clearly despite the loud hum of the kitchen hood and the chopping noise. She wondered how she even heard that.

She pushed down the inexplicable surge of emotions and feigned nonchalance. "Mr. Ivan, I really have to thank you for introducing me to Garrett. He's quite remarkable."

Shifting the conversation, her frantic heart finally settled.

"I had seen Garrett on a TV show before, and he seemed sharp, but I thought it was just for the cameras. It wasn't until I met him in person that I realized he's even more impressive than he comes across on screen."

Ivan's brow slowly wrinkled into a frown.

A woman praising another man incessantly in his presence was discomforting.

His reply carried a chill, "Garrett is all talk, and as for the rest, well..."

The underlying sarcasm was hard to miss.

Haley glanced at him, "Aren't you and Garrett friends? Why do I sense some animosity from you toward him?"

Ivan responded with a sneer, "During our time studying abroad, he shamelessly crashed at my place for two years, and I couldn't get rid of him."

It wasn't like him to badmouth others behind their backs, but he couldn't help undermining Garrett whenever Haley mentioned how impressive he was.

He felt childish and couldn't control these immature impulses.

"A true man knows when to be flexible. Garrett, even as a student, managed to secure a place to stay with sheer cheek. No wonder he's accomplished so much since."

Ivan was dumbstruck. She was supposed to commend Garret for leeching off him for two years. Instead, she was spurting this nonsense.

"Mr. Ivan, step aside; I'm about to fry, and I don't want oil splattering on you."

With that, Haley subtly dismissed him.

Ivan pursed his perfect lips and stepped back.

Ivan watched as Haley cooked. In less than an hour, she had whipped up six dishes and a soup. She looked just as composed as when she first entered the kitchen, her hair still perfectly in place.

"Dinner's ready." Haley grinned as she untied her apron. "I made fried chicken wings again. Owen is going to love it."

Ivan stepped forward to help carry the dishes to the table, which the children had already neatly surrounded, waiting obediently.

"Wow, chicken wings! Haley, you're amazing!" Owen exclaimed in delight.
