Chapter 789
Haley was completely stunned.
She finally understood Ivan's hatred for Martin and why he aimed to expel him from Watertown.Martin's presence was indirectly responsible for his father's death.
Even if he had to die, his father shouldn't have borne such a stigma.
"Martin has a typical antisocial personality. Even though my father died for him, he hasn't changed at all," Ivan said slowly. "He always felt that the Winston family wronged him, and always thought that his suffering was because of me. After my father's death, he was triggered and arranged countless attempts to assassinate me. I was just lucky to survive."
Haley hugged him tightly. "Someone like him should be sent to prison, not left outside to harm others."
Ivan wrapped his arm around her slender waist and said softly, "I can't remember much after I turned fifteen. I don't know why I didn't send him to prison. Maybe it had something to do with Brenda. She felt that the Winston family owed Martin and would have stopped me from doing so."
Haley sighed. "What if Brenda forces you to release Martin next?"
"Absolutely impossible." Ivan stared at her delicate face. "If he hadn't harbored dirty thoughts about you, maybe I could have given him another chance. But he shouldn't have targeted you. Haley, I'm so grateful you recognized me at first sight and didn't lose hope in me. If it weren't for you, I might still be struggling in war and violence."
"Didn't we agree not to say thank you to each other anymore?" Haley playfully grabbed Ivan's collar.
As soon as her hand touched it, she felt the desire deep in Ivan's eyes.
She quickly let go. "I'll go check on the kids."
"It's very quiet outside; they should be asleep," Ivan's voice became hoarse. "Haley, let me make up for our wedding night, okay?"
"Who needs your compensation?" Haley glared at him angrily.
But her glare had no deterrent effect. Ivan gently pulled her wrist, and she fell into his arms.
Ivan kissed Haley, from the corner of her eye to her lips, then to her neck, collarbone, and chest.
The room's temperature surged abruptly as two bodies intertwined, sinking into the soft bed, merging their warmth repeatedly.
The night was long, and the moonlight was bright.
Haley was exhausted and comfortably fell asleep in Ivan's arms.
Ivan hadn't slept so deeply in over a month, always needing to stay alert in his slumber to avoid assassination. However, that night, he finally had a peaceful rest.
Until Haley suddenly started struggling uneasily in his arms.
"No... don't scratch my face!"
Haley covered her face and woke up with a start, sitting up straight. Her back was covered in cold sweat, and she looked like she had just been pulled out of water.
"Don't be afraid." Ivan held her in his arms. "I'm here; no one will hurt you anymore."
Haley leaned against Ivan's chest, listening to his strong and steady heartbeat, and gradually calmed down.
Haley thought, 'It is strange. Why did I dream of being kidnapped by Isabel?
Despite the disfigurement causing some unhappiness, it didn't cast a psychological shadow, yet she still dreamed of that scene.
"I'll find the best plastic surgeon for you. Your face will be restored," Ivan comforted her softly while patting her back. "Don't worry about it; everything will be fine."
Haley held his hand and said, "I'm fine. I really don't care much about the disfigurement; it's just that the wound is a bit itchy."
She scratched through the bandage.
Ivan quickly held her restless hand. "The doctor said you shouldn't scratch it. I'll get you some antibiotics. Take the medicine and then go back to sleep."
