Chapter 888
Haley grabbed her phone and headed to the study, flipping open her laptop.
Even though the news about the Lumi Group was being hushed up, folks were still blowing up the internet with posts. A bunch of stories were trending.
To make the revenue numbers look better, Hollis had the workers pulling crazy overtime, some shifts hitting almost sixteen hours. A ton of workers passed out on the job, and one guy almost died and is now stuck in the ICU.
Haley skimmed through the news and said seriously, "Bryan, our site runs on two shifts, eight hours each. You gotta keep an eye on this yourself."
Bryan took her words to heart, jotting down notes.
After the call, Haley looked pretty worried. With Hollis's tactics, the petrochemical project would probably show big profits in a month.
The resort project was doing okay, but it started off behind the petrochemical one. Even if they busted their butts, they could only just keep up. Beating Hollis and her crew was gonna be tough.
More than half of the assessment period was over, with just over ten days left. As Haley was thinking, she felt a cold breeze from the window.
The floor-to-ceiling window in the master bedroom had been fixed and turned into a balcony with a sliding door. The lock was always secure.
Haley glanced up and saw the sliding door being pushed open, and a dark figure slowly walked in. Her eyes widened. She jumped up and tried to run.
"Stop." A cold, creepy voice said.
Haley froze. Her legs wanted to move, but her brain said no. She stood there awkwardly, just a few steps from the door.
The dark figure walked closer, "Haley, surprised? Didn't think I'd show up here, huh?"
Haley glared at him, "Martin, this is Watertown, Ivan's turf. Touch me and see what happens."
It was Martin. He wore a black cloak hiding his figure, and a black hat shadowing most of his stern face.
Only Martin's sharp, cold lips were visible, twisted in a mocking smile.
"Think I need to do it myself?" Martin sneered and pulled out a metal earring from his pocket.
Haley's eyes narrowed. She should've known the earrings came in pairs. One was sent to her, leaving the other.
"Lie down on the bed." Martin pressed a button on the earring and said softly.
The words hit Haley's ears and echoed in her mind, thanks to the Bio-intelligent Chip. She clenched her teeth, trying not to move.
"Haley, it's pointless. No matter how hard you fight, it won't change a thing." Martin walked closer, "The Bio-intelligent Chip is in you now. With the controller in my hand, you gotta do whatever I say."
Martin's hand brushed over Haley's hair, "Good girl, lie down on the bed."
His voice echoed in her mind, turning into a buzzing sound. As Haley's consciousness started to fade, she slowly moved her legs towards the bed, took off her shoes, and lay down.
"Wouldn't it have been easier if you were this obedient from the start?"
