Chapter 34 The Unexpected Visitor
Haley curled her lips slightly. If she could take back half of the shares today, it wouldn't be a wasted trip. As for the other half, she believed she would be able to obtain it soon enough.
She chuckled, "Emily and I are sisters, no thanks necessary."
Madam DeRoss, with her fragile health, had difficulty attending the banquet. Finally seeing her granddaughter, who had been missing for four years, released the tension in her heartstrings, and her body instantly weakened.
"The butler, will prepare the share transfer agreement, and let's sign it now," Madam DeRoss commanded coldly, coughing once.
Her health was frail, and she could leave this world at any moment. Before that happened, she must settle the mess that was the DeRoss family.
"Grandmother, there's no need to rush, right?" Emily suppressed her unwillingness deep within and spoke. "Signing the agreement tomorrow would be the same."
Flora chimed in, "Yes, why be in a hurry? It's your birthday today, and we can handle the share transfer tomorrow."
Madam DeRoss frowned, about to speak, when a bone-chilling voice suddenly came from the entrance of the dining room.
"What's all this? Such a lively discussion."
A tall figure walked in from the entrance. He was dressed in a black suit, exuding an aura of dominance. His craftsmanship was like that of a perfect sculpture, flawless from every angle.
As he entered, a gleam appeared in Emily's eyes. She couldn't help but feel drawn to him.
The expression on everyone's faces was unbelieving. Ivan, he actually came. Today was Grandma's birthday, and as a gesture of politeness, she called him to invite him to the banquet.
For the past four years, every time the DeRoss family held a banquet, she invited him, but he never showed up, so this time she didn't hold any hope either. Who could have thought that when she least expected it, he would come. Ivan, he actually came!
Emily couldn't contain her excitement. She rushed forward in her high heels and said, "Ivan, why didn't you say anything when you decided to come? We should have waited for you to dine together."
Ivan spoke calmly, "I happened to be passing by and thought to stop by and wish Madam DeRoss a happy birthday. This is a fine tea. I hope Madam DeRoss will like it."
He placed an exquisitely packaged gift box in front of Madam DeRoss. Madam DeRoss knew that the Winston family was extraordinary, so she didn't mind his indifferent attitude. She instructed the servant to add an extra set of tableware. Ivan sat down straight away.
Mr. DeRoss and Flora were both overjoyed. For the past four years, Ivan had never set foot in the DeRoss family, let alone had a meal with them. But tonight, Ivan came.
Could it mean that Ivan had finally decided to marry Emily?
The other members of the DeRoss family were also very happy. If Emily really married into the Winston family, they would also benefit greatly.
"Ivan, try this dish. It's authentic and very delicious..." Emily excitedly served Ivan some food.
But there was the same usual indifference on the man's face. "Don't you know that I have mysophobia?"
"I..." Emily was speechless, her face flushed. "I'm sorry, Ivan. I was just too happy and forgot about that." She quickly took the dish she had served in Ivan’s bowl back.
The back-and-forth conversation between the two made the atmosphere at the dining table awkward. Ivan seemed to realize this as well.
His clear gaze unintentionally swept over Haley, and he casually asked, "What were you all talking about just now? Why did it stop?"
"No, it's nothing." Emily quickly denied. She glared fiercely at Haley, hoping that this despicable person would understand and leave quickly. However, she was destined to be disappointed.
Haley chuckled softly. She had figured it out. The DeRoss family had indeed attached themselves to the Winston family, but it seemed that Ivan didn't really like Emily.
She couldn't understand why Ivan, who clearly didn't like Emily, would stay here and interact with the members of the DeRoss family. But none of this had anything to do with her. She only needed to know, that the DeRoss family has to save face, in front of Ivan.
She smirked and said, "Mr. Winston, we were just discussing the DeRoss Group's shares, and you happen to be a witness."
Ivan seemed interested, “Oh, a witness for what?”
"Haley!" Flora interrupted angrily, "This is a private matter for our DeRoss family. There's no need to let outsiders laugh at us."
Madam DeRoss suddenly spoke up, "Ivan is also somewhat a part of the DeRoss family, so it doesn't matter if he knows."
Somewhat a part of the DeRoss family? What does that mean? Haley was visibly stunned. She looked up and saw Emily's eyes glued to Ivan. Could it be that the DeRoss family and the Winston family had arranged a marriage?
No wonder when the DeRoss family's stock price was about to hit the limit a few days ago, the Winston family stepped in to help. It turned out that there was this connection.
Haley remained calm and lowered her gaze, saying softly, "If Mr. Winston is a member of the DeRoss family, then he can't be the witness."
As Emily's fiancé, Ivan naturally stood on Emily's side, so there was no need for Haley to expose all the gossip and create an enemy for herself. However, Ivan seemed very interested in this matter.
He lightly tapped the tabletop with his slender fingers and said, "Madam DeRoss, you're not accurate in your statement. I have never been a part of the DeRoss family. Miss DeRoss should know this very well, right?"
Emily's face turned pale. She had been following Ivan for so long, and he always addressed her as Emily. Now she panicked, as she realized that Haley had returned, and it was this conniving woman who had spent the night with Ivan.
And she, one day, would be exposed and rejected. No! She wouldn't allow such a thing to happen! Emily's lips trembled as she forced a smile and said, "Grandmother, what you think between Ivan and me is not what you imagine. Please don't mention these things in the future."
Madam DeRoss pursed her aged lips. In her mind, if her granddaughter gave birth to a child, then the other party must marry her granddaughter.
But the Winston family was too powerful, and she had no ability to make Ivan take responsibility for Emily. She had advised Emily to give up, but Emily refused. So she didn't bother much with it. Ivan leaned back in his chair.
"All right, Haley, you can continue," he said. Haley couldn't quite figure out what this man meant.
Tonight was the private banquet of the DeRoss family, and Ivan showed up here, which could only mean that he had a close relationship with the DeRoss family.
If they had a close relationship, then why did he embarrass Emily so frequently? Could it be that this was how Ivan and Emily usually interacted? Forget it, it doesn't have anything to do with her anyway.
Haley pursed her crimson lips and said, "Mr. Winston should have heard about my story, right? I died four years ago..."
