Chapter 189

After a preschool pickup, Haley drove to the hospital.

"Wow, Haley, you came!" Owen beamed from his hospital bed, itching to leap off, "And Angela too! Amazing!"

Hastily, Haley pressed him back down, "You're still on the drip. Stay put."

Obediently, Owen lay back, his gaze flickering between Haley and Angela and grinning goofily. His head was bandaged, faint traces of bloodstain visible. A night of IV fluids had left his hands bruised.

Todd pressed his lips together tightly and approached, picking up Owen's medical records from beside him.

Owen flinched, "Wha-what are you doing? Haley's right here. You wouldn't dare!"

Todd lifted the medical chart slightly, “Just admiring the doctor’s handwriting.”

He took the chart out to the balcony.

Owen wondered if he'd just appeared utterly weak and pathetic at that moment. Thankfully, Angela diverted his attention by offering him a teddy bear, "Wow, Angela, is this a gift for me? It's so cute; I love it!"

With a smile, Haley said, “That’s Angela’s favorite toy. Her giving it to you means she really treasures your friendship.”

"Friendship? I don’t wanna just be Angela’s friend. I want to be her big brother!" Owen clasped Angela’s hand, batting his large eyes as he pleaded, “Hey little sis, can I be your big brother? I’ll love you, spoil you, and I won’t let anyone be mean to you..."

Angela looked on, her eyes wide with a blank innocence, offering no response.

Haley, not wanting Owen to feel down, changed the subject, “Hey Owen, where’s your dad? And Alfred, where did he go?”

"Daddy stayed with me all night yesterday, but he had to go to work today; he won’t be back till this evening. Alfred was just here. He’s probably out getting some snacks. Just wait a little longer, Angela. Alfred’s bound to bring back a bunch of tasty treats..."

Owen's constant chatter filled the hospital room, with Haley chiming in from time to time. It created a warm and harmonious atmosphere.

Todd stood on the balcony, flipping open the medical chart.

The doctor's handwriting was a scribbled mess, and he had to scrutinize it to make any sense of it.

The more he read, the grimmer his expression became.

His mom had downplayed it yesterday, and he had thought Owen was really okay.

But after reading, he realized that Owen had had a really close call.

If they hadn't gotten to the hospital on time, the kid might never had woken up...

And it was all because he had sent Owen away from preschool yesterday...

Todd folded the chart, his expression complex. He walked back inside and put the chart back.

Owen hummed, “So, you can't read the doctor's scribbles, huh?”

He had flipped through it the day before, unable to recognize a single word, thinking it looked like random runes.

“I'm not as dumb as you,” Todd replied coolly.

"Dumb? How am I dumb? I can read at three years old and recite poems at four. My teacher says I'm a little genius, and you dare to call me dumb?”

Todd remained calm, “I was already familiar with astronomy and geography at three and a half.”

Owen was speechless. It couldn’t be true!

But then he saw the look of proud delight on Haley's face, and he knew; Todd was telling the truth. That jerk, being smarter than him?

Unacceptable!

Pretending not to care, Owen retorted, “Hmph, my brother could speak eight languages at three years old, way cooler than you!”

“Actually,” Todd interjected, “a three-year-old's vocal system isn't fully developed. They can handle a maximum of four languages at most. Any more would cause a language disorder.”

Owen was stunned. His brother really could only speak four languages at that age, but how could this guy know so precisely?
