Chapter 842

No matter what the gig was, Hollis had the hookups. It was all on her if things go south or not.

"Hey Dad, let's roll with what Grandpa said," Haley said, all chill. "We can just pick our own thing, so she can't whine about losing 'cause she sucks at this."

Haley's words hit Ava right in the feels.

Ava scoffed, "Don't come crying when it blows up in your face."

Haley just shrugged, "Why would I? You think I give a damn about being the heir?"

Ava was left speechless again. She realized Haley was just here to mess with her. Every word, every look from Haley was meant to get under her skin!

Ava swallowed her anger and, just like Haley thought, picked the petrochemical project.

Haley, all laid-back, said, "Cool, I'll take the resort project then."

This was the second-best project out of the three, pretty average all around.

Cauth just sighed, keeping his mouth shut. Bark jumped in, "Alright, next up, we're splitting up the crew. Everyone here will be split into two teams. In a month, you gotta show some results. Do well, and you get a promotion. Pick your side."

The Lumi Group only had three big projects this quarter, so now everyone was getting shuffled into these two, turning it into a showdown.

In Watertown, big families with a ton of kids used this method to pick heirs. Bark just copied the playbook, no creativity.

After a few minutes of awkward silence, someone finally spoke up.

"I'll stick with the petrochemical project. Been on it forever, and I wanna help Ms. Evans nail it." First to speak was Nolan Taylor, the biggest shareholder in Lumi Group outside the Lumi Family. Dude's got major clout in his fifties.

Once he spoke, the rest followed like sheep.

"I got promoted by Ms. Lumi herself, so I'm backing Ms. Evans on the petrochemical project."

"Even though I was on the resort project, I suddenly feel like tackling the petrochemical one. Hope Ms. Evans gives me a shot."

Out of the fifty people in the room, at least thirty were clearly team Ava.

The rest were mid-level managers who didn't know Ava or Haley well, just waiting to be told what to do.

Listening to everyone make their picks, Hollis finally relaxed. All her prep over the past few days paid off; these folks didn't let her down when it counted.

Compared to Hollis, Cauth looked pretty grim.

He didn't expect these senior shareholders to totally ignore him.

He finally got how rock-solid Hollis's position in the company was.

Cauth was about to say something when Haley gently touched his arm.
