Haley couldn't help but laugh mockingly.
She never expected Ava to be so shameless. She thought, 'It is clear that Ava forced Bryan out of the race with underhanded tactics, yet she could still speak so righteously about it.'
"What are you laughing at?"
Ava glared at Haley angrily, looking as if she wanted to eat her alive.
"I laugh at how dirty your mind is," Haley drawled with a smirk. "The Lumi Group should be inherited by a member of the Lumi Family, not someone like you, an outsider. To me, there's no one more suited for the heir position than Bryan. His withdrawal doesn't change anything; as his older sister, I have a duty to safeguard his position."
Her words were resolute and powerful, sending a jolt through Bryan's heart.
He was stunned by Haley's statement. He recalled their encounter that afternoon at the Lumi Family estate, where she had only asked him about the succession. Her decision to host this party seemed to be a direct result of his withdrawal.
At that moment, Bryan suddenly understood why Haley was so determined to compete for the position. Maybe she wanted to preserve it for him, but more likely, she didn't want to feel indebted to him.
Bryan's emotions were a tangled mess. He thought, 'Is Haley being overly courteous, or is she genuinely looking out for me?'
"You're just full of excuses!" Ava erupted in anger. "You and Bryan are half-siblings who've barely met. How could you possibly have any real feelings? You're only in it for yourself, to inherit the Lumi Family's wealth. That's all this is."
"Ava!" Bryan cut her off sharply. "You don't know the nature of my relationship with Haley. I can stand up for her, and she will stand up for me. We're siblings by blood, while you're just an outsider."
"YOU!"
Ava was beside herself with rage.
Hollis quickly intervened, pulling her back before she could say anything irreparable.
"Mom, why are you holding me back?" Ava demanded, taking a deep breath. "I've cared for Bryan all these years, and now he's teaming up with an outsider against me. I'm not going to let this go."
"Do you really want him to reveal why he withdrew from the succession?" Hollis said through gritted teeth, her voice low.
"And if he does, it's Haley who'll be shamed. She had an affair during her marriage; people will tear her apart!" Ava shot back.
Hollis, frustrated, replied, "Revealing it would only give you a few days of satisfaction. Do you even realize what you stand to lose? Scheming against your own family in such a way is unforgivable in your grandfather's eyes. You can forget about the heir position!"
Ava suddenly grasped the gravity of the situation, realizing, 'In Bark's eyes, Bryan will always be the most important. If he finds out I used underhanded tactics to force Bryan out of the race, he'll despise me.'
"Enough with the arguments," Bark's voice cut through the tension with a cold, authoritative tone. "Haley is a descendant of the Lumi Family and, therefore, has every right to compete for the position of heir. There's no further debate on this matter."
