Chapter286
Ivan was still at the house. It was best to send this harbinger of doom on his way before anything else.
Haley stepped out of Todd's room, softly clicking the door shut behind her.
Descending the stairs, she found Ivan sitting on the couch, not looking like he was about to leave.
She went into the kitchen, poured a glass of warm water, and said softly, "Thanks for helping take care of the kids tonight, Mr. Ivan."
"You've already thanked me three times."
Ivan took the glass from her, his gaze lingering on her.
He pursed his lips as if wanting to say something, but unsure how to proceed.
The truth about Keith and Owen's biological mother was known only to a few in the Winston and DeRoss families.
He had always felt no obligation to explain himself to anyone.
Yet now, a voice inside was telling him that if he didn't come clean to Haley, and she found out through other means later, she would never step foot in the Winston residence.
He pondered and hesitated. He never had he been this conflicted, even when facing multi-billion-dollar deals.
Haley, observing his strikingly handsome face, was clueless about his internal struggle.
Since he didn't seem to know how to start, it was just as well that she had something to say, too.
"Mr. Ivan, I made a trip back to the DeRoss home tonight." Haley set down her glass, leaning back slightly into a defensive posture.
Her lips curved faintly. "I've been wondering why, after five years, Jeremy suddenly showed up to demand custody of the children. Today, I learned that Emily has been informing Jeremy about all my affairs. Emily herself has orchestrated my current predicament."
Ivan furrowed his brow. "How does she happen to know Jeremy?"
The smile on Haley's lips slowly turned cold.
Five years ago, it was because Emily knew Jeremy that her eighteenth birthday was ruined.
It was understandable that they knew each other.
However, the events of five years past were no longer worth discussing.
"I'm telling you this, Mr. Ivan," Haley said coolly. "If Emily comes after me, I will fight back. I hope you won't intervene in our matters."
Ivan's frown deepened. "What do you mean?"
A moment ago, she was soft and grateful, but now, suddenly, she was cold. Her words, one after another, seemed laced with hidden blades.
"I know you have deep ties with the DeRoss family, and it seems that Emily…" Haley paused, her lips curling into a wry smile. "I've heard rumors that you are about to get engaged to Emily. If Emily were your fiancée, do you think they would stand by and watch me go after her?"
Ivan's face turned icy in an instant.
His fingertips were cool as they tapped lightly on the tabletop, his words measured and deliberate "Who told you that Emily is fiancée?"
Haley pursed her lips.
In fact, she had no desire to inquire about the nature of the relationship between Emily and Ivan, but for some reason, she had blurted out the question.
Even if Emily were Ivan's fiancée, it wouldn't matter to her. When it came time to take action, she would proceed without any hesitation.
"She's not my fiancée. I have no relationship with her," Ivan stated coldly.
Emily was the mother of the children but not his partner in any sense. There was indeed no relationship to speak of.
Hearing this, the tension in Haley's heart suddenly eased.
She offered a smile. "All right, I understand. It's getting late. You should leave now."
Ivan stood up, his gaze lingering on Haley's fair face for a few seconds before he finally turned and left the villa.
The matter of the children would have to wait for another opportunity to be explained.
