Chapter 417 Terror Filled Her Eyes
Haley stood in front of the sink, washing her hands, and the kitchen was filled only with the sound of running water.
She looked down at her hands and spoke again, "I won't let go of the four children, but I also won't marry into the Winston family because of them."
Ivan looked at her profile, with her long lashes shielding the emotions in her eyes.
He couldn't see through what she was thinking.
He pursed his sensuous, thin lips and asked softly, "Why?"
Haley dried her hands.
She slowly looked up with clear eyes, her rosy lips revealing a hint of sharpness.
There were things she didn't want to mention.
But this man—he had almost kissed her just now—the aggressiveness in his eyes was too strong.
It made her think of that night five years ago...
At first, she had resisted furiously and struggled with all her might, but it was all in vain. She was still torn to pieces by the man.
That was the most desperate night of her life.
Each time she remembered that night, she felt sick...
Haley hadn't said a word yet, but Ivan could already see the hatred in her eyes.
That revulsion hit him like a wave, making his breathing unexpectedly constricted.
He had lived for over twenty years and hadn't spoken to many women, but he knew very well that wherever he went, he was the focus of all their conversations.
Heirs of prominent families and daughters of wealthy clans would never refuse him if he desired.
But Haley was an exception.
He offered to be with her, and his mother suggested they get married, but she refused them all.
They already had children together, yet she was still unwilling to be with him.
Was he so repugnant to her?
"I will never forget that night five years ago. If it hadn't been for your force, none of what followed would have happened," Haley said emphatically, "No matter how desperate I am, I would never marry a rapist."
The word "rapist" made Ivan's face turn stone cold.
He suddenly reached out and pressed his hand on Haley's shoulder. "That night five years ago, I had too much to drink..."
"Just because you were drunk, you think you can force yourself on a defenseless girl?" Bloodshot streaks appeared in Haley's eyes.
That night, she had drunk spiked wine and felt groggy throughout. With the last shred of her consciousness, she managed to escape the room.
But she went from the frying pan into the fire.
She bit her tongue to keep herself awake.
But what was the use of being awake when the man in front of her wasn't, tearing her clothes off bit by bit.
Her struggle, her despair, her anger, her tears... Looking back on it now, it was all so vivid...
"Ivan, you have no right to ask me to marry you." Haley averted her gaze fiercely. "Nor will I settle for a life of compromise for the sake of our four children."
Her life had been painful enough, and after finally moving on...
How could she compromise and marry the man who had ruined her life?
Ivan tightened his grip on her slender shoulders, his fingers slowly closing in.
He had thought of countless reasons but never imagined it was because of this.
That was why every time he approached her, terror filled her eyes.
