Chapter 983
The cops barged in out of nowhere and slapped cuffs on Sawyer, leaving everyone in the room totally floored.
Sawyer, the head of the Jenkins Family, had some clout in Brussville. Garrett, trying to keep it cool, said, "Mr. Sawyer Jenkins, we just need you to help with the investigation. Once we clear things up, you'll be free to go."
Odette quickly stepped in, "Mr. Collins, let's discuss this. The Jenkins Family will fully cooperate with any investigation. There's no need to drag Sawyer to the station."
A trip to the station would be a major black mark. If the head of the family got stained, the whole Jenkins Family's rep in Brussville would take a hit.
Garrett lowered his voice, "Mrs. Odette Jenkins, I'd love to help, but the complainant is a big shot from Watertown. The higher-ups want a thorough investigation. Don't worry, if it's not a big deal, Mr. Sawyer Jenkins will be back soon."
Garrett signaled, and two young officers escorted Sawyer out.
Sawyer paused and said calmly, "This project is a joint effort with the Reynolds, Coleman, and Hughes families. Mom, you should contact them first."
With that, Sawyer was taken to the police car.
Elara was in shock. "Wasn't this project going smoothly? How did things go south so fast?"
She grabbed Ellen's hand, "Why is the Reynolds Group, the biggest shareholder, unaffected?"
Ellen pulled her hand away. "It's just an investigation, Mrs. Elara Jenkins. The banquet's almost over, so we'll be leaving."
As Ellen left, the other guests started to trickle out too. The big banquet hall suddenly felt empty.
Patrick walked in, phone in hand. "I just got some info. The issue with the project came up at 2 AM yesterday. The other three families have ganged up to pin the blame on the Jenkins Family. They cooked up evidence overnight." Patrick's face was grim. "The wastewater discharge from the wind power project was government-approved. Last night, someone found water pollution and dead marine life, all blamed on this project."
Samantha frowned. "The discharge site is in a remote sea. Even if there was pollution, it wouldn't be reported so quickly."
"At 1 AM last night, that remote sea was bought by a big shot from Watertown," Patrick said. "The cops didn't waste any time. Less than twelve hours after the incident, they came rushing in to make arrests."
"What do we do now?" Elara was pacing anxiously. "Mom, you have to save Sawyer. If he goes down, the whole Jenkins Family is done for!"
"Calm down first," Odette said. "If we can meet the big shot and explain the situation, we might still have a chance."
"Even if the water is really polluted, all four families should share the blame. Why is it all on the Jenkins Family?" Micah gritted his teeth, "Grandma, I'll reach out to my friends to see if anyone can get us in touch with that big shot from Watertown."
The Jenkins Family members were frantically making calls, searching for a glimmer of hope.
Camilla bit her lip. Leaving now would be inappropriate, given the Jenkins Family's trouble.
Luckily, Micah finally got in touch with a friend who was responsible for hosting the big shot from Watertown. Patrick and Micah immediately rushed over.
