Chapter 1005
Cherry's eyes went wide, and she asked slowly, "Ma'am, do you want to adopt me as your daughter?"
Celeste was a bit surprised but then smiled warmly. "Would you like that?"
Cherry pointed at Debra next to her. "Debra's more well-behaved and sensible than me. How about adopting her instead?"
She knew Debra really wanted a family and parents. She could give this chance to Debra.
"Cherry, what are you talking about?" Imogen said, trying to look stern. "Mrs. Hernandez likes you. That's a big deal. You can't just pass it up."
Cherry looked down, nervously twisting her fingers.
"You all don't like me!" Debra yelled angrily and ran off.
Colin thought his wife was right; Debra seemed too cunning and intense. Their simple family couldn't handle a kid like her.
"Cherry, I like you. This kind of affection isn't something you can just give away." Celeste gently stroked Cherry's soft, fluffy hair. "Do you like me? If you are willing to be our daughter, you'll have your own room, go to preschool with other kids, and have tons of toys. Most importantly, you'll have parents and a warm home."
Cherry's eyes lit up. "Will I really have my own home?"
"Absolutely!"
Celeste's smile grew even warmer.
Colin squatted down too. "If you become our daughter, we'll give you the best of everything."
Cherry smiled and nodded eagerly. "Dad, Mom!"
"That's wonderful!" Imogen said with a smile. "Mrs. Hernandez, Mr. Hernandez, let's go handle the adoption paperwork."
While the adults were busy with the paperwork, Cherry looked everywhere for Debra.
"Looking for this?" Debra held up a crystal badge necklace. "You took my parents, so I took your necklace. Fair trade!"
Cherry choked up. "It was left to me by my real parents. Can you give it back? When I go home with my new parents, I'll bring you lots of yummy food and toys."
"If I got adopted, I wouldn't need you to bring me stuff!" Debra shouted angrily. "You're a thief! You stole my parents! I hate you!"
She threw the necklace hard. There were a bunch of kids playing in the yard, so no one knew who picked it up.
"Cherry, the paperwork's done. From now on, you have parents." Celeste held Cherry's little hand. "Why are your eyes red? Did someone bully you?"
Cherry was about to speak but held back.
If her new parents knew she was still thinking about her real parents, they'd be sad.
Cherry obediently said, "I'm fine. I just can't bear to leave Imogen."
Imogen chuckled. "You're such a sweet girl. Go home with your parents now, and don't forget to visit me when you can."
