Chapter 33 Who Will Get the Shares?

Sure enough, as Emily's words fell, the expressions of the people at the dining table changed drastically. Four or five years ago, that massive fire burned down the entire DeRoss family fortune.

They had lost carrying goods, worth billions of dollars, the DeRoss family took a full two years to recover from that incident. Everyone in the DeRoss family had been affected. It could be said that, although Haley was already ‘dead’ back then, whenever she was mentioned by the DeRoss family later on, they would grit their teeth in anger.

Haley noticed the change in everyone's faces and smiled softly, "I've always wanted to ask, what did Mother give me to drink on my eighteenth birthday? Why did I faint after drinking it and wake up later on a hotel bed."

After hearing this, Flora's face suddenly changed. She narrowed her eyes and said, "Haley, what nonsense are you talking about?"

"Grandmother, you know me, although I can be a bit willful, I have never been a reckless girl." Haley bit her lip, her gaze filled with mist. "After being locked in the warehouse by Father for eight months, I had lots of time to think.”

She looked puzzled, “In the end, all I could think of was that drink. It was because of that drink that I encountered all these uncontrollable events. Grandmother, I really didn't mean to disgrace the family."

Flora clenched her teeth. She had kept this matter very secretive, leaving no evidence behind. But if Haley, this little wretch, kept bringing it up, Madam DeRoss would definitely suspect her! She was now the head of the DeRoss family, and Ivan's future mother-in-law; she couldn't have any blemishes on her reputation.

Thinking this, Flora took a deep breath. "Haley, you are my most beloved daughter. How could I harm you? It's been five years since that incident, so let's not mention it anymore. Now that you're back, the most important thing is the future. Our family must be good."

"Yes, we should look forward," Haley's mouth curved in a sinister smile. "Just now, Emily said she is now the heir of the DeRoss family?"

For some reason, Emily's heart skipped a beat. She forced a smile and said, "Haley, back then everyone thought you were dead, and since the DeRoss family only had me, naturally, I became the heir."

"But now that I'm back, shouldn't the heir position be returned to me, Emily?" Haley's face displayed a gentle smile, but her eyes revealed a sharpness.

No one expected Haley to bring up the heir issue on her first day back home. The DeRoss family had been operating in the business world for many years, accustomed to indirect and convoluted matters. Mr. DeRoss never expected this to happen so soon.

Haley felt even more wronged. "Mother, didn't you promise to love me as before? I want to reclaim my rightful position as the heir. Mother will surely help me, won't you?"

Flora was taken aback and struggled to maintain a smile on her face. "Haley, today is Grandma's birthday. Let's talk about the inheritance matter tomorrow, okay?"

By the time tomorrow came, Haley's body will have turned cold, and there would be no need to mention the inheritance anymore.

Unexpectedly, the second daughter-in-law spoke up, "Flora, I think Haley has a point. In the past, when she passed away, the inheritance was given to Emily. But now, since Haley is alive, it wouldn't be right to continue monopolizing Haley's belongings."

The third daughter-in-law chimed in, "Flora just doesn't want to give back her shares, which amounts to fifty percent. It's a huge sum of money. If it were me, I wouldn't be willing to give it up either."

These two women were intentionally trying to bankrupt her!

"The matter of the inheritance isn't something that can be changed on a whim," Mr. DeRoss said coldly. "Haley, don't stir up trouble as soon as you come home. Just eat your meal!"

Haley's eyes became even colder. Flora, at least, could pretend to be a loving mother, but her father, on the other hand, had exposed his true nature so abruptly.

Of course, Haley knew it was impossible to retrieve the shares of the DeRoss Group today. No, based on the shamelessness of the DeRoss family, it was impossible for her to regain the shares in this manner.

However, she insisted on speaking up at this moment, causing trouble for a few members of the DeRoss family.

She bit her lip and pleaded, "Father, I don't need the status of heir, but can you return the shares of the DeRoss Group to me? It is the legacy my mother left for me, and I hope it can go back to its rightful owner."

Mr. DeRoss's expression grew even uglier. Originally, he was reluctant to give up on his daughter, but now it seemed unnecessary.

Four or five years ago, she had brought shame upon the family and should have died in that devastating fire. Now, causing trouble as soon as she came back, she would only be a nuisance if she stayed.

"Haley's words make sense," Madam DeRoss, who had remained silent, spoke up. "Those shares, rightfully belong to Haley, since she is still alive."

"Madam DeRoss!" Flora grew anxious and finally couldn't pretend anymore. "Emily has made significant contributions to the DeRoss Group in these four years. And now that Haley is back, does that make Emily nothing?”

Exasperation filled her voice, “I'm not favoring Emily here, I just believe that no matter what we do, fairness should prevail. Haley and Emily are both daughters of the DeRoss family, we cannot favor one and neglect the other."

Haley never expected her grandmother to speak up in her defense. Honestly, she had never intended to retrieve the shares today, because no one would give up what they had already gained.

Since her grandmother had spoken, then she would catch the opportunity.

"Flora needs to give up some information," she continued. "My mother is right, fairness is important. How about this? I will generously, donate 25% of the inheritance my mother left me, to Emily. Father, what do you think of this?"

Upon hearing this, Emily felt like she was going to spit blood. Give it to her? Instead, she would have to give 25% of her own property to that little wench Haley! There's no way she would agree to that.

Madam DeRoss looked at Haley seriously. "Are you really willing to give up 25% for your sister?"

"Grandmother, I am willing," Haley softly replied. "In these four years, Emily has been the heir of the DeRoss family and has done so much for our family. She deserves these shares."

Madam DeRoss nodded. "Emily, you should thank Haley."

Emily was furious. Not only did they make her give up shares, but they also wanted her to say thank you? Who gave them the right?

Flora's expression was also grim. Since the day she arrived, the old woman had been favoring that disgusting Haley. It had been four or five years, and yet the old woman still cared for Haley in every aspect. Why couldn't that old hag just die in the hospital bed?
