Chapter 168

Ivan's brows furrowed even deeper. "You're taking lessons here at the Winston family estate?"

There was a distinct impatience in his tone.

Emily took a deep breath, striving to remain composed. "As you know, my grandmother isn't well, bedridden for many years. Practicing at the DeRoss estate would disturb her rest. Besides, Keith arranged for this piano teacher, and I'd like him to supervise my practice."

Finishing her explanation, Emily gazed at the man on the sofa, her eyes shimmering. However, Ivan didn't spare her a glance, merely surveying the piano with a knitted brow.

Keith's decisions were something he rarely interfered with, and even though it went against his personal preferences, he would not voice any objections.

Emily let out an inward sigh of relief. She had feared being publicly humiliated if he had demanded she remove the piano.

Just then, Keith descended from the second floor and noticed the new addition to the living room corner. "Mother, what's this?"

Emily, with a triumphant lift in her brow, replied, "Keith, I bought this piano specially for today. What do you think?"

It was the finest piano from the largest store in Cuenca, a premium imported piece she purchased for triple its price...

Keith approached the piano, his clean fingers tinkling the ivory keys, and gave his nod of approval. "It'll do."

Though it fell short of the one he'd selected, it was more than adequate for now.
He tapped on the piano keys once more, and a short but fluid run of notes cascaded into a melody.

Emily was taken aback. "Keith, you play piano too?"

"No," Keith pursed his lips and withdrew his hands, "How much for this one?"

After all, it was he who had suggested that his mother learn to play the piano—he couldn't let her foot the bill.

Emily's lips curled into a faint smile. "Three million."

Keith's brow furrowed. "That's steep."

The piano he had picked out for his mother had a better sound and was in tune, yet it was priced under two million.

"It is pricey, but that's because this is the best in the shop. I snapped it up for three times its price..." Emily remarked, "Only a piano like this is worthy of Master Alice's tutelage..."

Keith fell silent. He always thought his mother was selfish, but today he realized she was rather foolish too.

She seemed to think she had gotten a bargain for this piano at three million.

Emily gathered her skirt and sat down in front of the piano. Although it had been three to four years since she’d played, the fundamentals were still ingrained in her.

Back in her college days, a piano piece had made her the belle of the campus, an idol to all the male students.

Now that she thought about it, she had never played the piano in front of Ivan before.

Confidently, Emily pressed the keys.

She played "Für Elise."

After learning that Keith had arranged for Alice to be her teacher, she practiced this piece tirelessly last night, hoping to foster a closer relationship with the acclaimed maestro.

She played with expert skill.

If Ivan heard her play the piece in its entirety, he would certainly view her differently. Perhaps, he might even come to admire her, maybe even fall for her...

But as Emily's fingers touched the keyboard, someone entered through the villa's front door.

She turned and saw a woman in a red gown walk in with elegant poise.
