Chapter 693
Thomas and Haley sped away from the Hinterlands.
Half an hour later, they pulled up in front of the villa.
As soon as they stepped out, four kids burst out of the house.
"Mommy, Uncle Thomas, you're back!"
"Mommy, are you hurt?"
"Uncle Thomas, where did you go? What happened?"
The kids, sharp-eyed as ever, noticed Haley's torn sleeve and the red mark on her arm.
Four pairs of worried eyes stared up at them.
Thomas waved it off. "It's nothing. Let's get inside."
Haley changed clothes and came back downstairs, tying on an apron with a gentle smile. "Give me thirty minutes, and lunch will be ready."
"Mommy, we already ate," Owen grinned. "Keith and Todd made steaks."
Todd added, "We saved some for you and Uncle Thomas. Come eat first."
Thomas took a bite of steak, exaggerating his delight. "Wow, this is better than my chef's! How about I become your godfather?"
Keith, serious as ever, cut in, "This isn't the time for that. Mommy, we need to talk."
Haley's heart skipped a beat.
These kids were sharp, and together, they were a force to be reckoned with.
Her odd behavior and now the injury had definitely raised their suspicions.
She knew this day would come but still had no idea how to explain.
"Mommy, I miss Daddy," Angela said, eyes misty. "I want to go back to Watertown, back home."
Owen chimed in, "Mom, can we go back soon? I miss Dad too. Even though he's strict, I love him. It feels like forever since I last saw him."
What started as a simple act turned real as Owen's eyes filled with genuine tears.
Keith pressed on, "Mom, did you and Dad fight over us? Is that why we left?"
"You kids shouldn't be asking these questions!" Thomas rubbed his temples. "Once this is sorted out, your mom will explain everything."
Though curious himself, Thomas trusted Haley would open up when ready.
But the kids were too young to deal with such heavy stuff.
"Mom, we're not little kids anymore," Todd said slowly. "If you and Dad are divorcing, we can choose who we want to stay with. What's really going on?"
Haley felt a bitter taste in her mouth.
The kids were too smart. Hiding the truth would only make things worse.
She decided to come clean.
Trying to stay calm, she said, "I came abroad to find your dad."
"What?"
Four pairs of eyes widened in shock.
"The man in Watertown isn't your dad," Haley continued. "He's your uncle, your dad's brother."
